Instructional Methods
- refers to the various techniques and
strategies that teachers use to facilitate
learning and guide students in acquiring
knowledge and skills. These methods are
chosen based on the learning objectives,
the needs of the students, and the
subject matter.
What are the different
Instructional Methods
in Teaching
Education?
• Direct Instruction
• Inquiry-Based
Learning
• Collaborative
Learning
• Problem-Based
Learning
Direct
Instruction
Direct Instruction
- is the use of straightforward, explicit teaching
techniques, usually to teach a specific skill. It is
a teacher-directed method, meaning that the
teacher stands in front of a classroom and
presents the information.

Ex: Lectures, presentations, step-by-step

explanations or demonstration.
Inquiry-
Based
Learning
Inquiry-Based Learning
- Inquiry-based learning is a method of learning which
incorporates active participation of students by
involving them in posing questions and bringing real-
life experiences to them. The basis of this method is
to channelize the thought process of the students
through queries and help them in “how to think"
instead of “what to think".

E.g. discussion, science experiments, research

Collaborative
Learning
Collaborative Learning
- is an umbrella term for a variety of educational
approaches involving joint intellectual effort by
students, or students and teachers together. Usually,
students are working in groups of two or more,
mutually searching for understanding, solutions, or
meanings, or creating a product

Ex: Group projects, peer reviews, debates, group

discussion.
Problem-
Based
Learning
Problem-Based Learning
- Students are presented with complex real-
world problems and are required to solve
them through research and collaboration.

Example: Case studies, problem-solving

scenarios in business or healthcare.
Flipped
Classroom
Flipped Classroom
- Instruction is delivered through videos or
materials that students review outside of
class, and class time is used for active
learning and discussions.

Ex: Video lectures assigned for homework,

with in-class activities focused on practical
Differentiated
Instruction
Differentiated Instruction
- Tailoring teaching methods to meet the
individual needs of students based on their
abilities, interests, or learning styles.

Ex: Providing various types of content, such

as videos, readings, or hands-on activities;
adjusting the pace of instruction.
Experiential
Learning
Experiential Learning
- Learning through experience by engaging in
hands-on activities that are directly related to
the subject matter.

Example: Field trips, internships, simulations,

lab experiments.
Kolb defined learning as “the process
whereby knowledge is created through
the transformation of experience” This
learning experience consists of four
stages:
• Concrete Experience (CE): feeling
• Reflective Observation (RO): watching
• Abstract Conceptualization (AC):
thinking
• Active Experimentation (AE): doing
These four stages of learning typically
move through a cycle that begins with a
student having a concrete experience
John Dewey's philosophy of
"Learning by Doing" offers a
framework for fostering deep,
meaningful learning
experiences. His ideas
underscore the importance of
active engagement, problem-
solving, and social interaction
in the learning process.

important aspect of teaching and

activities of teachers and
