Introduction to yarn count
Yarn count
• Yarn count is numerical expression which
defines its fineness.
Direct Indirect
system system
Direct system
The direct system of denoting linear density is based on measuring
the weight per unit length of a yarn. The units of mass and
length vary from trade to trade. In direct system, as the yarn
number increases, yarn becomes coarser.
Let,
N= yarn count
W= the mass of yarn sample in the units of the system
L= length of sample in unit of system
l= unit length of the system then, N W l
L
The main systems in use are:
Tex - weight in grams of 1000 metres
• Decitex - weight in grams of 10,000 metres
• Denier - weight in grams of 9000 metres
Unit of length and weight in direct
system
Yarn number Unit of weight Fixed unit of
system length
Tex Gram 1000 metres
Denier Gram 9000 metres

Woollen Pound 14400 yards/

Indirect system
In an indirect system the yarn count is the number of “units of
length” per “unit of mass”. Here also there are various units of
length and mass/ weight. As the yarn number increases, yarn
becomes finer.
Let,
N= yarn count or number
W= the mass of yarn sample in the units of the system
w=the unit of mass of the system
L= length of yarn sample in unit of system
l= unit length of the system
Then,
L w
N
l W
Unit of length and weight in indirect
system
• Tex × 9=Denier
• Cotton count (Ne) × Tex =590.5
• Cotton count (Ne) × 1.5 = Worsted count
• Cotton count (Ne) × 2.8 =Linen (wet spun)
• Cotton count (Ne)× 1.693 = Metric count (Nm)
• Worsted count × Tex= 885.8
• Metric count × Tex= 1000
• 30s Woollen count
• Weight= 1 pound
• Length= 30x 256 yds
