Beekeeping for Beginner
• Beekeeping is a lucrative and low input entrepreneurial venture

• Interested person should decide whether he want subsistence phase or

enterprises

• To make beekeeping enterprises as a sole source of an income

• But it is better to begin on a small scale

• To be successful beekeepers, one should acquire full knowledge by a training

• Training gives knowledge of bee behaviour, live operations, management,

knowledge of bee flora and pest of honeybees.
How to be start
beekeeping ??
• Acquire knowledge of bee behaviour, management from training and literature

• Gain sufficient knowledge and experience by working with AICRP (Honey Bees &
Pollinators) BUAT, Banda and progressive beekeepers

• Attend long term training of beekeeping from training centre

• Interested person can learn by associate with a perfect beekeeper for few month

• Start with 10 colonies, then increase their number with experience

• Bee colonies can be purchased from government or reputed privet firm or

beekeeper
When to start beekeeping ??
• It always advisable to start beekeeping when abundant floras of honey bee are
available in the vicinity of new apiary.

• Since the regional, climatic and floral condition vary from place to place.

• Hence, it is difficult to specify exact time for each location.

• The enough blossoms provide sufficient nectar and pollen for brood rearing.

• In the Bundelkhand/ plains, it may be started from November

• During this time plenty of flora available for the development of colonies.

• March onwards floral dearth starts, hence, better to avoid this time
Assessment of the area for
beekeeping
• Lucrative beekeeping also depends on suitable areas

• The areas with a good potential for beekeeping must be located and evaluated.

• The location which is rich of the bee flora for long durations is ideal for beekeeping.

• The diversity of bee flora, seasonal distribution and migratory root are base for
profitable beekeeping.

• Commercial Beekeepers generally migrate bee colonies from one place to another

• Migratory beekeeping produce more than one honey crop of different types.
Assessment of the area for
beekeeping
• In order to explore the potentiality of catchment area, guidelines given below:

• Referring to lists of known floral calendar

• Agro-ecosystems

• Climate conditions

• Large areas, about thousands of hectares land bearing good bee flora.

• Good bee flora are characterized by:

• Long blossoming periods, generally in terms of several weeks or months

• High density of bee flora with good nectar quality

Selection of the site for
beekeeping
• The selection of the site is very important for successful beekeeping

• Moving colonies around can place stress on the bees

• Stressed colonies are more likely to be infected with bee pests

• Honeybee colonies must be placed in orchard under the shade of the trees

• Shade prevents them from direct sun heating

• During winter, the colonies are kept under sun light

• This placement of bee colonies in orchards protects from wind breaks

Selection of the site for
beekeeping
• The selected site should be having natural sources of water

• The selected site should be off the main road but easily accessible by road

• Selected area should have proper sunlight and remain dry round year

• That way, they get the morning sun early, and will fly out to go foraging

• The hive should be placed on stands, 9 to 12 inches high

• The hive should be placed at a distance of 10 to 15 feet from one another

• The row to row distance should be 15 feet

Density of bee hive in an area
• It is very difficult to assess the number of bee colonies at apiary

• The density of bee hive in an area is very important for beekeeping

• Bees generally forage economically within a radius of 1 to 2 km

• Overstocking of colonies in an area would result in reduced honey yields

• The honey bee colonies of apiary should be located at the distance of 2 km

• Not more than 50 colonies must be placed in an apiary

• Otherwise problem of drifting and robbing will take place

Arrangement of hives
• Arrangement of hives at apiary is the key factor for successful beekeeping

• Keep the hives in shaded place but too much of the shade is not good for bees.

• The colony is capable to maintain a stable internal temperature, for optimal

colony health.

• One of the best ways to choosing an apiary site that is protected from hot
summer and cold winter winds

• Let do a site analysis of your property to define whether the site is suitable for
your hives.
