PROPERTIES OF EQUALITY

Equality is a symbolic expression of the fact that two

things are equal.

Reflexive Property of Equality

Symmetric Property of Equality
Transitive Property of Equality
Substitution Property of Equality
Addition Property of Equality
Multiplication Property of Equality
Properties of Equality

Let a, b, and c are real numbers.

1. Reflexive Property of Equality

For any real number a, a = a.
Any number or expression is equal to itself.

Examples:
1. 8 = 8 3. -6x = -6x

2. 4. 5y–3 = 5y–3
Properties of Equality

Let a, b, and c are real numbers.

2. Symmetric Property of Equality

If a = b, then b = a.
The numbers or expressions can be interchanged.

Examples:
1. If x = 8, then 8 = x. 3. If x+1 = 5, then 5 = x+1.

2. If -4x = 16, then 16 = -4x. 4. If 4y-2 = 8x, then 8x = 4y-2.

Properties of Equality

Let a, b, and c are real numbers.

3. Transitive Property of Equality

If a = b, and b = c, then a = c.

Examples:

1. If 4+3 = 7, and 7 = 5+2, then 4+3 = 5+2.

2. If x+4 = y-7, and y-7 = 9, then x+4 = 9.

Properties of Equality

Let a, b, and c are real numbers.

4. Substitution Property of Equality

If x = y, then y can be substituted for x in any expression containing x in
the equation.

Examples:
1. If x = 3 and y = x+4 2. If 9x-5 = 3x+7 and x = 2
then y = (3)+4 then 9(2)-5 = 3(2)+7
y=7 18-5 = 6+7
13 = 13
Properties of Equality

Let a, b, and c are real numbers.

5. Addition Property of Equality

If a = b, then a + c = b + c.
The equality is still true if the same number is added
to both sides of the equation.
Examples:
1. If 5 = 3+2, then 5 + ___ 6= (3+2) + ___. 6
2. If x+8 = -7, then x+8 + ___(-3)
= -7 + ___.(-3)
2. If -3y-2 = 10, then -3y-2 + ___ =2 10 + ___. 2
Properties of Equality

Let a, b, and c are real numbers.

6. Multiplication Property of Equality

If a = b, then ac = bc.
The equality is still true if the same number is
multiplied to both sides of the equation.
Examples:
1. If 5 = 3+2, then 5 (6)(3+2)
= . (6)
1. If 2x = -6, then 2x ( ).( )
