SOFTWARE DEFINED

RADIO FOR UAV/INDIAN

DEFENCE
SDR Technology
• A software-defined radio (SDR) is a wireless device that typically
consists of a configurable RF front end with an FPGA or
programmable system-on-chip (SoC) to perform digital functions.
Commercially available SDR hardware can transmit and receive signals
at different frequencies to implement wireless standards from FM
radio to 5G, LTE, and WLAN

 Front-end of an SDR system handles signals in the analog domain, whereas the back-end processes signals in
the digital domain.
 The digital back-end features a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and utilizes reconfigurable logic gates
for different functions.
 This FPGA has various onboard digital processing capabilities including modulation, demodulation, up-
conversion and down-conversion. The reconfigurability of this digital back-end allows new algorithms and
protocols to be implemented easily and without modifying the existing hardware.

SDR vs HDR

 Software-defined radio (SDR) is a

technology that enables
communication systems to be
implemented in software, rather than
through specialized hardware defined
radio (HDR). This allows for greater
flexibility, improved performance,
and reduced costs compared to
traditional radio communication
systems.
 HDR is designed to operate at specific frequencies and Frequency
with specific modulation schemes. This makes it difficult reconfigurable
to adapt to changing requirements or to support multiple
communication protocols.
Applications of Software-Defined Radio
 Military communications: SDR can provide secure and flexible communication systems for military
operations, allowing soldiers to communicate over different frequencies and formats with ease.
 Public safety: SDR can be used by emergency responders, such as police, firefighters, and paramedics, to
communicate during disasters or emergencies. SDR can enable interoperability between different agencies,
making it easier to coordinate responses.
 Broadcasting: SDR is useful in broadcasting to improve the quality of transmissions and allow for the
delivery of multiple services over a single frequency band.
 Wireless communication: SDR can be used in wireless communication systems, such as Wi-Fi and cellular
networks, to provide more efficient and flexible communication services.
 Amateur radio: SDR has revolutionized amateur radio by making it easier to receive and decode signals
from around the world.
 Satellite communication: SDR can be used in satellite communication to improve the flexibility of the
communication system and provide better coverage.
 Internet of Things (IoT): SDR can be used in IoT applications to enable communication between devices
and improve the efficiency of the network.
 Radar: SDR can be used in radar systems, such as weather radar, to improve the resolution and accuracy
of the system.
Limitations of Software-Defined Radio
 Computational power requirements: SDR requires significant computational power to handle real-
time signal processing.
 Latency: SDR systems require a certain amount of time to process signals, which can lead to
latency issues.
 Complexity: SDR technology is more complex than traditional radio systems, requiring
specialized knowledge and skills to develop and maintain.
 Cost: While the cost of SDR hardware has decreased in recent years, it is still more expensive than
traditional radio systems.
 Security: As SDR is entirely software-based, it may be susceptible to hacking or other security
threats.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Our country lacks the SDR technology/products for Civilian and Defense Market
• Indian companies collaborate with foreign vendors and manufacture.
• We propose to design and develop SDR products for Civilian Market/Indian defense.
• The plan is to implement the most commonly used multiplexing scheme orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing (OFDM) transceivers in SDR technology with reconfigurable architecture for wireless
communications such as 5G, Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11 etc .
• Which can later be used in multiple applications such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or drones.
