Definition of Moments of
Inertia for Areas
It is a measure of an object’s resistance to change to
its rotation

Also defined as the capacity of a cross-section of

resist bending

 Is must be specified with respect to a chosen axis of

rotation

Moment of Inertia
Formulate the second moment of dA about the pole O
or z axis
This is known as the polar axis 2
dJ O r dA
where r is perpendicular from the pole (z axis) to the
element dA

Parallel Axis Theorem for an Area

The moment of area of an object about any axis

parallel to the centroidal axis is the sum of
moment of inertia about it’s centrodal axis and
the product of area with the square of distance
of C from the ref axis
IXX= IC+Ad2 A is the cross-sectional area.
d: is the perpendicular distance between the
centroidal axis and the parallel axis.

Parallel Axis Theorem for an Area

 For moment of inertia of an area known about an
axis passing through its centroid, determine the
moment of inertia of area about a corresponding
parallel axis using the parallel axis theorem
 Consider moment of inertia
of the shaded area
 A differential element dA is
located at an arbitrary distance
y’ from the centroidal x’ axis

Parallel Axis Theorem for an Area

The fixed distance between the parallel x and x’ axes
is defined as dy
For moment of inertia of dA about x axis
