SUBJECT : EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
TOPIC: PERSONALITY
DETERMINANTS/FACTORS OF PERSONALITY
PERSONALITY
Personality is any person's collection of
interrelated behavioral, cognitive, and emotional
patterns that comprise a person's unique
adjustment to life.
Personality does not evolve by a single factor.
It is a mixture of a lot of things.
Some of those factors are psychological, some
are physical, some are biological and some are
even hereditary.
Personality is the wide term, which is the result
or net effect of different circumstances and
factors. There are many factors which affect
personality or which determine the personality.
1. Biological Factors
I. Physical Features
The physical features of the individual also
have a great impact on personality.
Physical features include height, weight as
such other physical aspect of an individual.
 One of the most important factors in
determining personality is the ‘Physical
Characteristics’ of an individual.
It is believed that this factor plays a vital role
in determining one’s behaviour in any
organization
Physical features may involve the height of a
person (short or tall), his color (white or
black), his health status (fat or skinny) and
his beauty (handsome or ugly) .
These factors are involved when interacting
with any other person t and thus contribute in
the personality development in many ways.
II. Chemique
 It is mean the possible effects of the ductless glands on the
personality development.
 Ductless glands are glands that secrete hormones directly into
the bloodstream, and are also known as endocrine glands.
 (gland) An organ that makes one or more substances, such as
hormones, digestive juices, sweat, tears, saliva, or milk.
 Thyroid gland secretes a chemical known as thyroxin, which
controls rate of growth.
 When the gland is underactive the individual becomes
lethargic and despondent.
 When this gland is overactive, the individual becomes restless,
irritable and unstable.
The other glands like the pituitary, the sex
gland and the adrenal gland affect the
behavior of the individual and then his
personality-
These ductless glands do interlocking
activities; they are stimulating one another,
inhibiting one another and compensating one
another. They Play important role in bodily,
mental, and emotional development
III. Nervous system
The efficiency of the sensory organs depends
upon the well-developed quality of the
nervous system and we know that the sensory
organs are the gateways of knowledge.
Our intellectual efficiency, physical power,
patience, the quickness of adjustment, the
readiness of acquiring new modes of
responses, our reasoning and thinking all
depend on the efficiency of the nervous
system.
Any injury to the system will affects the
personality of the individual.
iv. Heredity
Heredity is the transmission of qualities from
generation to generation.
This can happen due to chromosomes of the
germ cell. Heredity predisposes to certain
physical, mental, emotional states.
It has been established through research on
animals that physical and psychological factor
may be transmitted through heredity.
It has been concluded from various
researches that heredity plays an important
part in determining an individual’s
personality.
Physical structure, facial attractiveness, gender,
temperament, muscle composition and reflexes,
energy level, and biological rhythms are
characteristics that are generally considered to
completely by who your parents were i.e., by their
biological, physiological, and Inherent
psychological makeup.
The hereditary approach argues that the ultimate
explanation of an individual's personality is the
molecular structure of the genes, located in the
chromosomes.
Evidence demonstrates that traits such as
shyness, fear, and distress are most likely caused
by inherited genetic characteristics.
It suggests that some personality traits may
be built into the same genetic code that
affects factors such as height and hair colour.
 If personality characteristics were
completely dictated by heredity, they would
be fixed at birth and no amount of experience
could alter them.
For example, if you were relaxed and easy
going child, it would be result of your genes,
and it would not be possible for you to change
those characteristics. But personality
characteristics are not completely dictated by
heredity.
2. Sociological
Social factors also play a vital role in
determining one’s personality.
The things that revolve and evolve around us on
a regular basis determine our personality.
The society that we live in, the cultural
environment that we face daily, the community
we get interacted to, all are included in this
factor. Relationships, co-ordination, co-operation,
interaction, environment in the family,
organizations, workplaces, communities,
societies all contribute in one way or another as
personality determinants.
I. Home
 Parents and other family members have strong influence on
the personality development of the child.
 Parents have more influence on the personality development
of a child as compared to other members of the family.
 Family influences the behaviour of a person especially in early
stages.
The nature of such influence will depend upon the following
factors:-
 Family Size
 Birth Order
 Race
 Religion
 Geographic location
 Parent’s educational level
 Socio- economic level of family
ii. School
The first peer group of childhood is
characterised by play and then the child is
admitted to the first formal institution of the
society, the school.
The school is aimed to inculcate in him or her
behaviour patterns required in adulthood.
The school environment makes him/her learn
punctuality, regularity and scheduling by
conditioning.
iii Culture
 Culture is the factor which determines the decision making power
of an individual.
 It includes independence, competition, artistic talent, aggression,
Co-operation etc.
 Each culture expects that the person should behave in a way,
which is accepted by the group.
 Person belonging to different cultural groups has different
attitudes.
 Every culture has their own sub-culture also.
 The culture in which one live in, may involve traditional practices,
norms, customs, procedures, rules and regulations, precedents and
values, all are important determinants of personality.
 Moreover, creed, religion and believes are also very important
factors of personality determinants.
 However, a direct relationship cannot be established between
personality and given culture.
iv. Language:
Language to be a valid and reliable mode of
measuring
understanding personality, each person’s
and

unique language Patterns contain embedded

clues about their stable individual
characteristics
3. psychological Factors
I. Intelligence
Greater and stronger mental ability have better
control over themselves.
However, having very superior Intelligence affects
personality development unfavourably because it
creates special problems which are not encountered
by those persons who are merely bright.
These various problems result in the development of
a personality pattern, which is characterised by the
traits like negativism, intolerance, habits of
chicanery, emotional conflicts, solitary pursuit, self
sufficiency, dominance, etc.
II. Motivation
Motivation is also play a key role in
developing personality of a person.
It may play as a role of motivation and
demotivation in a person's life.
III. Emotions
Emotions are considered important
personality determinants because they affect
Personal and social adjustment.
Research has shown that aspects of emotions
like dominant emotional balance, emotional
deprivation, excessive love and emotional
expressions, emotional catharsis and stress
directly and indirectly affect the development
of Personality.
IV ) Attitude
The attitudes and behaviours of parents,
siblings, peers, relatives and other people
towards the child will also affect interaction
pattern and thus influence the moulding of
personality.
V) Interest and sentiment
Interest and sentiment are another related
factor that determines the development of
personality.
Each individual have different thought
patterns and complexes.
