Definition of Terms in Research
Paper:
The Definition of Terms - section in a research paper
is crucial for establishing a common understanding of
key terms, concepts, and phrases used throughout
the study. This section minimizes ambiguity and
ensures clarity, allowing readers to interpret the
research accurately.
Purpose of the Definition of Terms:
1. Clarity and Precision:
Ensures that technical or specialized terms are
understood by the reader, avoiding confusion.

2. Consistency:
Maintains consistent usage and Understanding of
terms throughout the research paper.
Purpose of the Definition of Terms:

3. Contextual Understanding:
Provides context for how terms are used specifically
within the scope of the study, distinguishing them from
general or other specific uses.
Purpose of the Definition of Terms:
4. Avoiding Misinterpretation:
Prevents misunderstandings by defining terms
that might have multiple meanings or
interpretations.

5. Guiding Readers:
Assists readers who may not be familiar with
specific terminology used in the field of study.
Components of Definition of Terms
Term: The specific word or phrase being defined.

Definition: A clear and concise explanation of the term

within the research context.

Explanation (optional): Additional details on how the

term is used or its significance in the research.
Where to include Definition of Terms
Introduction: Often included towards the end of the
introduction to provide a quick reference for readers
before diving into the main content.

Appendix: In some cases, particularly if there are

many terms, the definitions might be included in an
appendix to keep the main text focused and concise.
Tips for writing Definition of Terms

Be Specific: Define each term as precisely as possible,

avoiding vague or broad definitions.

Use Simple Language: Avoid jargon within definitions

unless necessary, and provide explanations for any
complex concepts.
Tips for writing Definition of Terms
Relevance: Include only terms that are directly
relevant to your research.

Avoid Circular Definitions: Don’t use the term itself

as part of the definition.
Conclusion
The Definition of Terms - section is essential in
research because it establishes a clear foundation for
understanding the study's content, arguments, and
conclusions. By clearly defining key terms, the
researcher ensures effective communication and
comprehension among readers, supporting the
integrity and clarity of the research paper.

REVIEW OF
RELATED
LITERATURE
Rosemarie Molina
Report # 15
What is Review of related literature?

• The Review of related literature - involves the systematic

identification, location, and analysis of documents containing
information related to the research problem. The term is also
used to describe the written component of a research plan or
report that discusses the reviewed documents.
• A review of related literature (RRL) - is a detailed review of
existing literature related to the topic of a thesis or
dissertation. In an RRL, you talk about knowledge and
findings from existing literature relevant to your topic. If you
find gaps or conflicts in existing literature, you can also
discuss these in your review, and if applicable, how you plan
to address these gaps or resolve these conflicts through your
study.
A literature review would usually have these
components:

Introduction:

All literature reviews will definitely have an

introduction that sets some context by providing
information about the field of study, the relevance of
the chosen topic within the field, and the focus of the
literature review.
Methods:

Most literature reviews have a section that

describes the criteria used to select the sources or the
way in which the information has been presented. This
makes it easier for the readers to understand your
approach.
Body:

How your body paragraphs are structured would

depend on the organizational model you have chosen
to follow in your literature review. Thus, a
chronological model would probably have different
paragraphs for different time periods, while a thematic
model would have subtopics based on the different
themes.
Discussion and conclusion:

This section summarizes the main contributions of

significant studies and discusses the questions that the
review has raised about the topic and field. This is
also the section where you clearly mention the gaps in
research that the review has sparked and the possible
suggestions for future research.
Reference list:

The reference list is a very important part of a

literature review as your article is based entirely on
primary sources. The reference list should be
detailed and page numbers and section details
should be provided wherever necessary.
How do you write RRL?

When writing the review, begin by providing the

background and purpose of the review. Then, begin
discussing each of the identified resources according
to the way you decided to organize them. For each,
you can mention the title, author, publication, and
date before describing the key concept and points.
Example:

 Source: Gay, L. R., Mills, G. E., & Airasian, P.W. (2006).

Educational
Research: Competencies for analysis and applications (8th ed.).
Upper Saddle River, NJ: Merrill Prentice Hall. Gay, pp29-44.

 Akhtar R, Boustani L, Tsivrikos D, Chamorro-Premuzic T. 2015.

The engageable personality: personality and trait EI as predictors of
work engagement. Pers Individ Differ. 73:44–49.
Goal And citation of
Related literature review

Airah Joyce Samortin

Report #16
What is the goal of review related literature?

The purpose of a literature review is to collect

relevant, timely research on your chosen topic, and
synthesize it into a cohesive summary of existing
knowledge in the field. This then prepares you for
making your own argument on that topic, or for
conducting your own original research.
Goal and objective of review related literature?

A goal is an achievable outcome that is generally

broad and long-term while an objective defines
measurable actions to achieve the overall goal.
Citation of review related literature

It is how you give credit to the author for their

creative and intellectual works that you referenced
as support for your research. Generally, citations
should include author's name, date, publisher
information, journal information and/or DOI (Digital
Object Identifier).

DESIGN

Report #17
What is Qualitative Research?

Definition: Qualitative research explores phenomena

through non-numeric data such as interviews,
observations, and textual analysis.

Purpose: To gain in-depth understanding of people’s

experiences, perceptions, and social contexts.
Types of Qualitative
Research Designs
ETHNOGRAPHY

(Greek ethnos=folk/people and graphien=writing) it is

often employed for gathering empirical data on human
societies/cultures.

Data collection is often done through participant

observation, interviews, questions etc.
Types of Ethnography

Macro-Ethnography
ethnography researcher can study broadly defined
culture.

Micro-Ethnography
alternatively it may focus on more narrowly defined
ones.
Phenomenology

Phenomenology is a 20th century philosophical

movement dedicated to describing the structure of
experience as they present themselves to consciousness,
without resources to theory, deduction, or assumptions
from other discipline such as the natural sciences.
Describes the meaning of the lived experience about a
concept or a phenomenon for several individuals.
Grounded theory

The term grounded means that the theory

developed from the research is "grounded" or it has
roots in the data from which it was derived
Historical research

Historical research is the systematic collection and

objective evaluation of data related to pass
occurrence in order to test hypothesis concerning
causes effects or trends of these events that help to
explain present events and anticipate future events
 Identification of origin date
 Evidence of location
 Recognition of authorship
 Analysis of data
Case study

The case study research design have evolved over

the past few years as a useful tool for investigating
trends and scientific situations in many scientific
discipline especially social sciences, psychology,
anthropology etc.
Action research

Action research is a way of doing research and

working on solving a problem at the same time.
