Ppt08. Sampling Distribution of Sample Means

This document outlines a lesson on sampling distribution of sample means, including objectives such as illustrating random sampling and constructing sampling distributions. It includes activities for calculating sample means from given populations and constructing frequency distributions. Additionally, it provides steps for determining possible samples and emphasizes the concept of sampling error.

The following are the blood types of a group of
individuals in a government office. Construct a frequency
distribution for the different blood types.

Activity 1: Sampling
Distribution
A population consist of the numbers 2, 4, 9, 10, and
5. Let us list all possible samples size of 3 from this
population and compute the mean of each sample.
Sample Mean
2, 4, 9 5.00
2, 4, 10 5.33
2, 4, 5 3.67
2, 9, 10 7.00
2, 9, 5 5.33
2, 10, 5 5.67
4, 9, 10 7.67
4, 9, 5 6.00
4, 10, 5 6.33
9, 10, 5 8.00
There are 10 possible samples of size 3 that can be drawn
from the given population.
Sampling Distribution of
the sample mean
A sampling distribution of sample means is a
frequency distribution using the means computed from
all possible random samples of a specific size taken from
a population.
Sample Mean Frequency
3.67 1
5.00 1
5.33 2
5.67 1
6.00 1
6.33 1
7.00 1
7.67 1
8.00 1
Total n = 10
Probability
Sample Mean Frequency
P()
3.67 1 = 0.10
5.00 1 = 0.10
5.33 2 = 0.20
5.67 1 = 0.10
6.00 1 = 0.10
6.33 1 = 0.10
7.00 1 = 0.10
7.67 1 = 0.10
8.00 1 = 0.10
Total n = 10 1.00
Observe that the means of the samples are
less than or greater than the mean of the
population. The difference between the sample
mean and the population mean is called the
sampling error. It is the error due to sampling.
Activity 2: Drawing Cards
Samples of three cards are drawn at random from a
population of eight card numbered from 1 to 8.

a. How many possible samples can be drawn?

Steps Solution
Identify the given Here N = 8 and r = 3
Use the formula to find = 56
the number of possible
samples that can be
drawn.
b. Construct the sampling distribution of sample means

Steps in Constructing the
Sampling Distribution of the
Means
1. Determine the number of possible samples that can
be drawn from the population using the formula:

where: N = size of the population

r = size of the sample
2. List all the possible samples and compute the mean of
each sample.
3. Construct a frequency distribution of the sample
means obtained in Step 2.
Seatwork
1. How many different samples of size r = 3 can be
selected from a population with the following sizes?
a. N = 4
b. N = 8
c. N = 20
d. N= 50
2. A population consist of the five numbers 2, 3, 6, 8, and
11. Consider sample size 2 that can be drawn from this
population.
a. List all the possible samples and the corresponding
mean.

Enrichment

11. Consider sample size 2 that can be drawn from this
population. Construct the sampling distribution of the
sample mean.
