Red blood Platelets

cells(most
numerous)
1.Red Blood cells(Erthrocytes)
Red blood cells are tiny ,disc like cells but they don’t have a nucleus
which makes them live for 120 days (4 months). After this 120 days
they are gathered and destroyed in the walls of liver and in the
spleen. Also the red haemoglobin in the RBC can change into a
yellow pigment ,bilirubin, which is excreted in the bile. Breaking down
hemoglobinDuring its metabolism, heme is converted to bilirubin, a yellow pigment that
can discolor the skin and sclera of the eye if it accumulates in the blood, a condition known
as jaundice.
They also contain haemoglobin which is a red pigment which is a
protein combined with iron. And helps with oxygen distribution.
Where oxygen is low haemoglobin become useful in carrying oxygen
from the lungs to the tissues. Blood that contains oxyheamboglobin
is oxygenated but blood with very little oxyheamoglobin is
deoxygenated.
Red blood cells are made in the Red bone marrow.
White blood cells(Leukocytes)
White blood cells are immune cells in the blood that help to protect the body
from diseases by engulfing, killing and clamping pathogens that enter the body.
Unlike erythrocytes the have a nucleus . Leukocytes are also created in the red
bone marrow. White blood cells help with antibody production and phagocytosis.
The two types of Leukocytes
• Phagocytes (Eating cell)
This are immune cells that play a critical role in immune responses at early
stages. This cells are the first defense line for any disease they are specialized in
capturing, ingestion and destroying of antigen(fungi and bacteria)
Cells that perform Phagocytosis are phagocytes .Phagocytosis is a process of
engulfing and destroying antigens by phagocytes .
• Lymphocytes
This are small white blood cells that help with antibody production as a response
to contact with antigens. The two types of lymphocytes are :
I. T- lymphocytes
They are used to destroy body cells that have been affected by the pathogens.
II. B-lymphocytes
They are used to produce antibodies which are used to attack antigens
Platelets(Thrombocytes)
Thrombocytes are small fragments of cells that are formed in the red bone
marrow they help with the clotting the blood at wounds and also stop bleeding as
well as pathogens from entering the body.
How does
clotting
occur?
