LiMn2O4

Assignment # 2
Shayan and Waqas Tanveer
What is the
structure like?
Structure

Spinel Structure
Spinel Structure
 In Lithium ion batteries,
intercalation cathodes used
have three structures that stand
out; olivian, spinel and layered.
 Commercially, the layered
LiCoO2 used but has some safety
concerns and has high cost.
 Spinel LiMn2O4 cubic close-
packed oxygen ions occupying
the 32e positions and Li ions
occupying one-eighth of the
tetrahedral 8asites while Mn
occupies half of the octahedral
16d sites
Theoretical Capacity ?
Theoretical Capacity

Lithium manganese oxide with cubic spinel structure

has attracted a great deal of attention due to its
advantages:
• like low cost
• abundance of manganese in earth crust
• environmental harmlessness
• high theoretical lithiation capacity (~148 mAh/g)
• practical specific capacity approaches to 120
mAh/g
Charge-Discharge Curves

From the second cycle onwards, the capacity was stabilized and maintained for the ten studied cycles.
Perceptible average discharge capacities of about 124, 118, 111, and 96 mA h g -1 were obtained when the
current was increased from 0.5C to 1.0C, 2.0C, and 4.0C, respectively.
Long cycle tests
Long cycle tests

As the cycle number increases, the capacity retention of the battery decreases as well as the
columbic efficiency.

Coulombic efficiency (CE), also called faradaic efficiency or current efficiency, describes the
charge efficiency by which electrons are transferred in batteries. CE is the ratio of the total
charge extracted from the battery to the total charge put into the battery over a full cycle.
Effect of different synthesis methods on capacity

LiMn2O4 synthesis methods include:

 Sol-gel method
 Solid State method
 Molten salt method
