INTRODUCTION
The construction industry is recognized as
a sector with great contribution to the
economic and social development of a
country, particularly due to the number of
direct and indirect jobs generated and its
influence on several other sectors which
produce materials, equipment, and
services in its production process.
Recent advances in construction
technology and structural design are
transforming the built environment,
enabling faster, more sustainable, and
more resilient construction.
2
BUILDING INFORMATION
MODELLING (BIM)
Building Information Modeling (BIM)
technology is a process that involves
creating and managing digital models of
buildings, infrastructure, and other
structures.
BENEFITS of BIM :
 Reduced construction time and cost
 Improved quality and safety
 Improved Visualization

The best example for BIM would be the

Nagpur Metro Rail project that adopted
5D BIM technology for the successful
completion of the project. 3
PREFABRICATION AND
MODULAR CONSTRUCTION
Prefab is a general term used for a
prefabricated building or building
component that is manufactured in a
factory prior to its final assembly at the
construction site whereas modular refers to
something built or organized in self-
contained unit like building blocks.
BENEFITS of PREFAB AND MODULAR
CONSTRUCITON :
 Construction is far faster
 Fewer risk factors
 Costs are lower
 Dismantling and recycling is easier 4
COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN
AND OPTIMIZATION
Computational design is a design method that
uses a combination of algorithms and
parameters to solve design problems with
advanced computer processing.

Software used for computational design are :

Autodesk Revit
Grasshopper
Dynamo

5
Benefits of Computational Design :

Ability To Simulate And Test Designs At An Early

Stage

Faster Design Modifications

Increased Efficiency And Productivity

Rationalising Complex Geometries And Improving

durability

6
ADVANCED MATERIALS
AND SYSTEMS
Advanced materials are driving innovation in the construction
industry by offering enhanced strength, durability, and
sustainability compared to traditional building materials.
Some key innovations in advanced materials used in construction:
High-Performance Concrete: High-performance concrete
(HPC) is designed to have superior strength, durability, and
resistance to environmental factors.
Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRPs): FRPs, such as carbon fiber
and fiberglass, are lightweight, high-strength materials used to
reinforce structures and replace traditional steel reinforcement.
Self-Healing Materials: Self-healing materials have the ability
to repair small cracks or damage automatically without human
intervention.

7
RESILIENT AND
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
Resilient and sustainable design both
focus on energy and water
independence, renewable resources,
local materials, resource storage,
community support, and preventing
environmental effects.
Benefits of Resilient and sustainable
design:
Earthquake resistant
Natural daylighting and Ventilation
Ecofriendly
Wind resistant

Examples of
sustainable
architecture around
the world:
Pixel Building
(Melbourne, Australia):
The Pixel Building was Australia’s
first carbon-neutral office
building, generating all its own
power and water on site.

CopenHill (Denmark): It’s

both a power plant that burns
waste to generate electricity, and
a sports facility where you can
take on one of the world’s tallest
climbing towers. 9
