MONOPHASIC LIQUID DOSAGE FORMS

Monophasic liquid dosage forms are clear, homogeneous mixtures where the solute is dissolved in a solvent, making them easier to swallow and absorb compared to solid forms. They can be administered through various routes but have disadvantages such as bulkiness and susceptibility to microbial growth. Common types include mixtures, syrups, elixirs, and linctuses, each with specific formulations and uses.

MONOPHASIC LIQUID

DOSAGE FORMS
Introduction
In pharmacy field, liquid dosage
form divided into two forms i.e.
Monophasic and Biphasic.
Monophasic means liquid having
only one phase and also called as
true solution is a clear
homogenous mixture.
Introduction
Monophasic dosage form refers
to liquid preparation containing
two or more components in one
phase system, it is represent by
true solution.
A true solution is a clear
homogenous mixture that is
prepared by dissolving solute in a
suitable solvent.”.
Introduction
The component of the solution
which is present in a large
quantity is known as “SOLVENT”
where as the component present
in small quantity is termed as
“SOLUTE
Advantages
It is easier to swallow, therefore
easier for children and old age
people.
Facilitate absorption of drug
faster than solid dosage form as
drug is already in solution form.
It is homogenous therefore give
uniform dose than suspension or
emulsion which need shaking.
Advantages
Simple and fast to formulate
It can be administered by various
routes : Oral, Parenteral
(injection),enema for rectal use,
otic (ear), nasal and ophthalmic
preparation
Disadvantages
They are bulky, so difficult to
transport and store.
Water is commonly use vehicle,
which is prone to microbial
growth. So addition of
preservative is needed.
When expose to direct sunlight it
may undergo hydrolysis, so need
to store in cool and dark place.
Disadvantages
Drug stability reduce by
hydrolysis or oxidation. So, they
have shorter expire date than
solid dosage form.
Other major sign of drug
instability are color change,
Precipitation, microbial growth
etc.
Classification
Liquids meant for internal
administration

A mixture: is a liquid preparation

administered internally, in which
the medicament or other additives
are dissolved in suitable vehicle.
Mixture dispensed in either glass
or plastic container with several
dose. If bottle contain only one
dose are known as draught.
Classification of mixture:

1. Simple mixture containing soluble

substances
2. Mixture containing diffusible solids
3. Mixture containing in-diffusible
solids
4. Mixture containing precipitate
forming liquids
5. Mixture containing slightly soluble
liquids

administration

Syrup: Aqueous preparations of

60% to 85% sucrose with or
without flavoring agents and
medicinal substances. e.g.
Chlorpheniramine maleate syrup,
Chloral hydrate .
The concentration of sugar is
66.7% w/w (I.P) and 85% w/v
(USP).
TYPES OF SYRUP
Simple Syrup: Simple syrup
contains only sucrose and
purified water.
Flavored Syrup: flavored syrup
are made by adding flavoring
matter to simple syrup e.g.
cinnamon water, orange flavor
etc.
Medicated Syrup: Syrups
containing medicinal substance
Liquids meant for internal
administration

Elixirs:Clear, aromatic, sweetened

hydro alcoholic solutions with or
without medicinal substances,
intended for oral use. E.g.
Dexamethasone elixir.
Elixir may contain less or No sucrose
hence less sweet and less viscous than
syrups.
Preservatives are not needed due to
alcohol content (self preserving).
TYPES OF ELIXIR
Medicated elixir: contain
medicaments dissolve in water
and alcohol along other
excipients. They are use for
therapeutic purposes e.g.
Dexamethasone elixir.
Non Medicated elixir: elixir
containing No therapeutic agents.
They are use in dilution of
medicated elixir and as a solvent
for drugs.
Liquids meant for internal
administration
Linctuses: Viscous, liquid and oral
preparations that are generally
prescribed for the relief of cough.
They are intended to sipped and
swallowed slowly Eg: Codeine
Linctus.
USES OF LINCTUSES
Demulcent
Sedative
Expectorant action
