Non-Verbal Communication
• Nonverbal communication is equally important. You can speak
volumes—without saying a word—with your body language. As the
saying goes, ‘the first impression is the last impression’, hence you
should always be careful with your body language. It is said that a
typical communication consists of more than 50% non-verbal
communication, which includes body language.
• All aspects of communication other than words themselves. It
includes how we utter words, features of environments that affect
interactions and that influence personal images & interaction
patterns.
Types Of NonVerbal Communication

• Kinesics
• Proxemics
• Paralanguage (Vocalics)
• Haptics
• Objectics
• Chronemics
• Oculesics
• Olfactics
Kinesics
•· Body language- Shows peoples feelings without communicating
them verbally.
Gestures
• Gestures- many people communicate with gestures and various body
movements. This allows for a person to show different feelings such
as anger, sadness, sincerity and etc.
· .
Posture- Slumped posture is a sign of feeling low, fatigued and inferior whereas an upright posture reflects confidence, openness and energy. Also the way people walk communicates how they feel. When people are sad they shuffle along slowly with their hands in their pockets where as if you are happy you walk energized
Haptics
• · Haptics: Nonverbal means of communication by touch. Touching-
is a common form of body language. Used to express affection, to
calm, or to interrupt. Hand shakes, hugs, kissing, pats on back
Facial expressions
• Facial expressions- our face is our most expressive body part. Eye
contact shows interest and shows that you are listening. Loping looks

distance between you and others, how you arrange furniture, and
other objects for social interaction, and how you respond to the
invasion of territory.

• Chronemics is the study of the use of time in nonverbal communication.

time and react to time is a powerful communication tool, and helps set
the stage for the communication process.
• Across cultures, time perception plays a large role in the nonverbal
communication process.
• Time perceptions include punctuality, willingness to wait, and
interactions. The use of time can affect lifestyles, daily agendas, speed
of speech, movements and how long people are willing to listen.
Oculesics

. Oculesics is one form of nonverbal communication, which is the

transmission and reception of meaning between communication
through eye contact without the use of words.

bodily smells and some cultures feel they are natural and should not
be covered up.
