Forms of Sentences
• There are Five kinds of Sentences They are :- Declarative
or Assertive
• Interrogative
• Imperative
• Exclamatory
• Optative
• Transformation is a process of changing the form of a
sentence without changing its basic meaning.
• No two expressions convey exactly the same meaning.
However when two forms convey almost the same
meaning, it is called transformation.
Rules
• There are four attributes of a sentence- Affirmative, Negative and
use of Antonyms . If any two of these are added together, the
meaning will normally not change.
1. He is alive
2. He is not dead.
• Some affirmative/Negative words and phrases can be interchanged,
giving almost the same meaning.
• Nobody/Nothing but= only
1. Nobody but Ram could lift the bow.
2. Only Ram could lift the bow
• Any body/Anything but =not
1. It Is anything but easy.
2. It is not easy.
• Not only…… but also= This as well as that.
1. He is not only intelligent but also well mannered.
2. He is intelligent as well as well mannered.
• Otherwise = if /if not
1. Work hard otherwise you will fail.
2. If you don’t work hard, you will fail.
Transformation of Degrees
In Some cases, we may use different Degrees to convey
almost the same sense. This is called Interchange of
Degrees.
Comparative and Positive Degrees-
• He is older than his Sister.
• His sister is not as old as he.
(Note the change of position of the Nouns compared and
the of not.)
• She is the taller of the two.
• The other one is not as tall as she.
Superlative Comparative and Positive Degrees-
• The Ganga is the Longest river.
• The Ganga is Longer than any other river/all other rivers.
• No other river is as long as the Ganga.
(Note the Position of the Nouns compared in Positive
Degree. Also note the use and position of no.)
• Harappa is one of the oldest cites.
• Harappa is older than most other cites.
• Very few cities are as old as Harappa.
(Note in Positive. The Position of the Nouns compared , the
use of Plural and the absence of no/not.)
Rules
Transformation from Positive to Comparative degree.
• As______as/So______ as is left out.
• Adjective/adverb is put into the comparative form along
with than.
• The affirmative Sentence is made negative and negative
affirmative.
Eg- Ram is as strong as his brother.
Ram’s Brother is not stronger than him.
Transformation form comparative to superlative degree.
• Any other/no other is left out.
• The Comparative form is changed into superlative form.
• Than is removed the is added before superlative degree.
Eg- Babu is faster than any other boy in the class.
Babu is the fastest boy in the class.
Rules
Transformation from positive to superlative.
• No other /any other is left out.
• As______ as/So_____ as is changed into superlative
degree of adjectives.
• ‘few/very few is changed into one of the’.
Eg- No Other Poet is as great as Kalidas.
Kalidas is the greatest poet.
Transformation from superlative to Positive.
• One of the is left out.
• The sentence begins with very few.
• Superlative degree of the adjective is changed into positive.
Eg- Sahil is one of the cleverest girls of her class.
Very few girls of Sahil’s class are as clever as she.
Transformation of kinds of satements.
Interrogative to Assertive
An Affirmative question becomes a negative statement.
A Negative question becomes a positive Statement.
Eg- Who can deny the fact?
No one can deny the fact.
Affirmative to Negative
Affirmative word is removed.
Opposite of the key word is used.
Change in key words-
Affirmative Negative
A few Not many
As Soon as No sooner-than
Always Never
All None
Everybody Nobody
Everyone None
Eg- He is not a slow runner.
