The document discusses sensory and motor mechanisms in plants and animals, highlighting how they detect and respond to stimuli. Animals possess specialized sense organs and a nervous system for quick responses, while plants rely on hormones and growth movements. Both organisms utilize these mechanisms for survival and adaptation to their environments.

Sensory and Motor Mechanisms

in Plants and Animals

Fourth Grading - Week 6
Introduction
• Sensory and motor mechanisms allow living
organisms to detect stimuli and respond
appropriately. Animals have specialized sense
organs, while plants use internal signals for
movement.
Sensory Mechanisms in Animals
• Animals have sense organs that detect
environmental stimuli:
• • Eyes - vision
• • Ears - hearing and balance
• • Nose - smell
• • Tongue - taste
• • Skin - touch and temperature
Motor Mechanisms in Animals
• Motor mechanisms allow animals to respond
to stimuli:
• • Nervous system sends signals to muscles
• • Skeletal muscles enable movement
• • Reflex actions provide quick responses to
danger
Sensory Mechanisms in Plants
• Plants detect stimuli through:
• • Light (Photoreceptors in leaves)
• • Gravity (Roots grow down, stems grow up)
• • Touch (Response in climbing plants)
• • Chemicals (Response to hormones)
Motor Mechanisms in Plants
• Plants respond to stimuli through movements:
• • Tropisms (Directional growth)
• - Phototropism (light)
• - Gravitropism (gravity)
• - Thigmotropism (touch)
• • Nastic Movements (Non-directional
response)
• - Example: Venus flytrap closing
Comparison: Sensory & Motor
Mechanisms
• • Animals have specialized organs and a
nervous system for rapid responses.
• • Plants rely on hormones and slow growth
movements to respond to stimuli.
• • Both detect and react to environmental
changes to survive.
Conclusion
• Sensory and motor mechanisms are crucial for
survival. While animals use a nervous system
and muscles, plants rely on growth and
chemical signals. Understanding these
mechanisms helps us appreciate how life
adapts to its environment.
