Optical Pyrometer

An optical pyrometer is a non-contact device used to measure high temperatures ranging from 700 to 4000 Celsius by detecting emitted radiation from hot objects. Key components include an objective lens, power source, reference lamp, eyepiece, and absorption screen, which work together to collect heat and display the temperature. Applications span various industries, including steel, glass, aerospace, and automotive, though it has limitations such as susceptibility to environmental factors and high cost.

WHAT’S OPTICAL PYROMETER?

• An optical pyrometer is a non-contact device used to

measure high temperature (700 to 4000) Celsius by detecting
the radiations emitted by hot body.
• An example of optical pyrometer is measuring the
temperature of molten metal in a furnace without touching it.
KEY COMPONENTS AND CONSTRUCTION:
Objective lens
 This lens gather the thermal radiation emitted by the hot objects and focuses it.
Power sources
A battery or other power sources provides the electrical current to heat the reference
lamp.
Reference lamp (filament)
A crucial component is a small electrically heated filament. The brightness of this
filament can be adjusted
Eyepiece
 This allows the user to views the image of the hot object.
Absorption Screen
 Insome pyrometer an absorption screen is used to extend the temperature range that
can be measured.
 Filter ( makes the radiations monochromatic)
WORKING PRINCIPLE

Object emits heat.

Heat is collected by lens
Detector senses heat.
Signal is processed
Temperature is calculated.
Temperature is display
