Lecture 2 Drawing Tools-2-26

This document provides an introduction to engineering drawing, focusing on the tools and techniques used in technical drawing. It discusses the importance of manual drawing as a foundational skill despite the advantages of computer graphics, and outlines various traditional drawing tools and their uses. Additionally, it covers best practices for maintaining clean drawings and techniques for drawing lines and curves accurately.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING DRAWING

Lecture 2

Technical Drawing Tools

Drawing Instruments and Accessories
Developing an engineering drawing can be either by manual drawing or by
computer graphics.

• Design and drafting on computer are cheap and less time consuming.

Then why we go for manual drawing?

• Computer cannot replace the drafting board and equipment as a learning tool.
Hence before use of the drafting software, the fundamentals regarding
drawing should be well understood.
Traditional Drawing Tools
1. Wooden and mechanical pencils
These are devices used to assist the human
2. Instrument sets, including

compass and dividers
3. 45- and 30/60-degree
The assistance includes:
triangles
• drawing lines straighter 4. Scales, T-squares, Set
• making circles more circular, and Squares
• increasing the speed with which drawings are 5. Irregular curves
made.
6. Protractors
The tools are typically used to create mechanical 7. Erasers and erasing

Borders: minimum of 10 mm space left all around in between the trimmed edges of the sheet
Filing margin: minimum 20 mm space left on the left-hand side with border included. For taking
perforations
Grid reference system: provided on all sizes of industrial drawing sheets for easy location of drawing
within the frame.
Title box: important feature on every drawing sheet. It is divided into two zone which contains:
Zone 1: details like the identification number or part number, title of the drawing, legal owner of drawing, etc.
Zone 2: system of projection, scale used, surface texture, tolerances, and other administrative items

Keeping Drawings Clean
Keeping your drawing surface clean is an important part of technical drawing.
Drawings become dirty primarily from the graphite from the pencils.
To keep a drawing clean, follow these guidelines:

• Never sharpen pencils over your drawing.

• Clean your pencil point with a soft cloth after sharpening.
• Keep your drawing instruments clean.
• Rest your hands on the drawing instruments as much as possible, to avoid
smearing the graphite on the drawing.
• When darkening lines, try to work from the top of the drawing to the bottom, and
from left to right across the drawing. Work from right to left across the drawing if
you are left-handed.
• Use a brush to remove erasure particles. Never use your hands.
Drawing Horizontal Lines

A horizontal line is drawn using the top

edge of the blade of the T-square,
drafting machine, or parallel edge.

By combining the straightedge with the 45- and

30/60-degree triangles, you can draw lines at
any 15-degree increment.
Drawing a Line through Two Points

To draw a line through two points, align

the edge of a triangle to the two points
and then pull the pencil along the edge of
the triangle.
Drawing parallel lines using
triangles
To use two triangles to draw parallel lines,
set up one of the triangles so that one
edge aligns along the given line. Use the
other triangle as a guide or base for the
first triangle. Hold the base triangle
stationary and slide the other triangle
along the edge of the base triangle to the
new position, where the line is drawn.
Drawing perpendicular lines

To use two triangles to draw perpendicular

lines, align one of the triangles so that one
edge (not the hypotenuse) is parallel to
the given line. Use the other triangle as a
guide or base. Hold the base triangle
stationary and slide the other triangle
along the edge of the base triangle to the
new position; draw the line
using the perpendicular edge of the
triangle that was moved.
Drawing a line at an angle
using two triangles

Two triangles can be used to draw a line at

an angle to a given line by using one
triangle as a guide or base and aligning the
other triangle so that one edge is parallel
to the given line. Hold the base triangle
stationary and slide the other triangle
along the edge of the base triangle to the
new position, where the line is drawn.
Steps in drawing an irregular curve
through a series of points
Examples of good and poor
drawing techniques for lines and
arcs, using traditional tools

Lines should be black, crisp,

consistent, & the proper thickness.
