Simple Sentence
• A simple sentence contains a subject and a verb,
and it may also have an object and modifiers.

• Each half of the sentence must be able to stand on its own

as a complete sentence. That means each half needs a
subject and a verb.

• The sentence must contain a comma before the

Examples :

dependent clause cannot stand alone, even though it has
a subject and a verb.

An example of an independent clause, one that can

stand alone:
Aung Aung came back home.

An example of a dependent clause, one that does not

• To connect independent and dependent clauses, you need
subordinating conjunctions like "after," "while”, “because”,
“although” or "since" etc.
• If the dependent clause comes first, you will generally
need to separate the clauses with a comma.
Examples :
• Although he was wealthy, he was still unhappy.

• A compound-complex sentence unites a compound sentence
with a complex sentence.

some milk, but I didn't have enough money.
• Even if the child is hungry, he will never eat oatmeal, but he
will always eat ice cream.
• The man was mean because he was lonely, yet his attitude
only made his situation worse.
