“How far do you agree that the nobility were a constant challenge to the authority of the monarchy c.1000-1603?”

I agree that the nobles were a constant challenge to the authority of the monarch because
during the Wars of the Roses, nobles fought to have the throne and even removed weak
kings from power. This war lasted for over 70 years in which kings had to try and remain in
power. The war was between two rival families, the House of York and Lancaster which
were both noble families. King Richard II was a weak king who was overthrown by a noble
called Henry Bollingbroke. Another young king, called Edward, was murdered by his own
uncle, Richard III who then became the king. This event proves that nobles were a
challenge to the monarchy.

However, I disagree as some kings were able to eliminate the threat of the nobles. William
Duke of Normandy was a powerful king who managed to control the nobles. He built 500
motte and bailey castles which protected his soldiers from attack from nobles. People were
also terrified of him as he was known to burn down entire villages such as the event known
as the Harrying of the North. He also confiscated land from Anglo Saxon nobles who
refused to obey him and instead gave the land to Norman allies. This shows that not all
monarchs were challenged by their nobles constantly.
