Objectives:
At the end of the session, students should be
able to:
•Determine if the given ordered pair is a
solution or not.
•Solve system of linear equation using
substitution
•Check if the ordered pair is a solution by
substituting the values of variables.

Substitution Method
- It is a method where you need to substitute the
value of its initial value in solving system of linear
equation.
EXAMPLES
Solve the system using
substitution.

{ 𝑥 +𝑦 =4
2 𝑥 + 𝑦=5
Solve the system using
substitution.

{2 𝑥 + 𝑦=3
𝑥 + 𝑦=7
Solve the system using
substitution.
𝑥+ 𝑦 =− 7
𝑦= 𝑥 +1

Steps in solving system of linear
equation in two variables by
substitution
1. Solve for one in terms of the other variable in one of the
equations.
2. Substitute the value of variable found in the first step of the
second equation. Simplify then solve the resting equation.
3. Substitute the value obtained in (b) to any of the original
equations to find the value of another variable.
4. Check the values of variables obtained against the linear
equation in the system.
