TOPIC: SENSORS
WHAT IS A SENSOR ?
A sensor is a type of input devices that
is used to capture data from its
immediate environment .
A sensor is used in an automated system
.

WHAT IS AN AUTOMATED SYSTEM?

An automated system is a system that is
designed to operate without the need for
any human intervention
CONTINUATION
A sensor is used to capture analogue
data from its immediate surrounding
environment. This data can then be
processed and analyzed by a
computer system. Sensors are
normally set to capture data at given
time intervals. This could be as
constant as every single second or
even fraction of a second. It could
also be set to be every minute or at
particular times of the day.
TYPES OF SENSOR AND USES
TYPE OF SENSOR IT’ S USE

Acoustic It can be used in a security system

Accelerometer It is used to sense a crash. i.e. car

crash.

Flow They are used in factories to maintain a

constant temperature in pipes
Gas They are set to measure a certain gas
such as carbon monoxide in homes.
humidity Used in farming to maintain the correct
level of moisture
Infra-red Used in security systems. Operate by by
capturing the infra red radiation emitted
by an intruder.
Level Used in cars to make sure liquids, oil,
and fuel don’t get too low.
CONTINUATION
TYPE OF SENSOR IT’ S USE

Light Automatic lighting systems eg.

Street lights.
Magnetic field Count how many cars pass in a
certain area eg. Car parking
PH(potential hydrogen ) Environmental agencies to maintain
the PH of soil and water sources
Pressure Used in security systems to
recognize an intruder when a door is
opened.
Proximity Used in robots manufacturing . To
measure how an object is to a robot.
Temperature Air conditioning to maintain a correct
level of temperature in a room.
