INTRODUCTION

Science was instrumental in the

developing changes in the 19th century.
Rizal was also a part of that century when
various methods of enlightening took shape
not only in the societal arena but also in
industrial concerns. Science was not at the
forefront of the Spanish colonial Philippines
in the 19th century. It was merely introduced
as a required subject to be taken to fulfill
The El Filibusterismo described a
student enrolled in a class of
physicians to be “reciting lessons
from memory “, which was a usual
predicament back then. Students
were to mimic, like parrots, the
lessons laid out by their professors
from the religious orders. When
students showed a sign of distance
for the subject, the atmosphere
transformed into “a sermon about
That was the context by which a
science was suppressed in the 19 th
century. But in one of Rizal's essays, the
religiosity of the Filipinos, Rizal asserted
that science is helpful in understanding
the creator.
As a propagandist writing in the La
Solidaridad , Rizal would invoke the
importance of science in laying out
reforms and in improving the state of the
country. In the indolence of the Filipinos,
Rizal argued the importance of physical
In the Philippines century hence, be
compared science with history.
“ History does not record in its annals
any lasting domination by a group of
people… the existence of a foreign
body within another endowed with
strength and activity is contrary to all
natural and ethical laws. Science
teaches us that it is either
assimilated, destroys the organism,
is eliminated or becomes encysted.”
An ardent admired of the
physical science. Rizal had to
prove his knowledge about the
subject when he was exile in
Dapitan. The solitude of
tranquility of the place provided
him with resplendent natural
surroundings and he believed
that any scientific pursuit would
As a scientist, Rizal shared his
interest with nature to his students.
With his boys, they explored the
jungles and searched for specimens
which he sent to museums in Europe,
particularly in dressed museum. In
return, scientifi c books and surgical
instruments were delivered to him
from the European scientists. He also
made a bulk of other researches and
studies in the fi elds of ethnography,
In his four year exile in Dapitan, he
fostered fascination for conchology or
the study or collection of shells.
However, Rizal's most signifi cant
contribution in the scientifi c world was
his discovery of three species:

§ Draco rizali – fl ying dragon

§ Apogonia rizali – small beetle

Collection of Shells
- Rizal collected 346 shells
representing more than 203
species, which was considered one
of the richest collections in the
Philippines at that time.
Correspondence with Scientists
- Rizal corresponded with
prominent scientists like Dr. Adolph
B. Meyer (German scientist) ,
sharing his findings and
contributing to the global scientific
community.
Educational Efforts
- Rizal established a school in
Dapitan where he taught various
subjects, including science, to local
children, fostering a culture of
learning and curiosity².

Draco Rizali
( a flying lizard )
• Also referred to as
Gunther’s flaying lizard,
this is notable for its
ability to glide between
trees using wing-like
extensions of its ribs.
This can be found only in
dense forests of the
Philippines and glide
Apogonia rizali
(a small flying
beetle)
• It was a rare species
of beetle discovered by
Rizal. This small beetle
only grows to about an
inch long when fully
mature.
Rhacophorus
rizali ( frog )
• Also known as the
Harlequin tree frog. This
species is a kind of rare
frog that is notable for
it’s vibrant orange-brown
color white, yellow, or
blue spots.
LIPTOCORISA ACUTA
(RICE BUG)
•It is slender, measuring 14-
17mm length and 3-4mm in
width. It is light yellow-green
to yellow-brown in color, with
a broad head and protruding
eyes. These are crepuscular,
and they feed on developing
rice grains using their
piercing-sucking mouthparts.
SPATHOMELES RIZALI
(HANDSOME FUNGUS
BEETLE)
•This discovery further
showcased the variety
of beetle species in the
region and contributed
to the scientific
understanding of beetle
taxonomy.
CYRETIS MAENALIS RIZALI
(BUTTERFLY)

•This is commonly known

as the common map wing,
butterfly species in the
family Nymphalidae. It is
notable for its delicate and
strikingly colored wings,
which are large in
proportion to its slender
The species named after Rizal’s name,
clearly displayed his contributions to
botany and zoology. His inquiries into the
local government provided detailed
accounts of his different contributions to
society.

educated in the West, and still able to

Biodiversity Research
Value to Scienc
Rizal's discoveries highlighted the rich biodiversity of the Philippines,
contributing to the global understanding of the region's unique flora and
fauna.
Scientific Methodology
His meticulous approach to collecting and documenting species set a
standard for scientific research and taxonomy in the Philippines.
Inspiration for Future Scientists
Rizal's work in Dapitan inspired future generations of Filipino scientists
and naturalists to explore and document the natural world.
SUMMARY
In the other hand, Dr.
Jose P. Rizal valued science
immensely, integrating it into
his life and work in several
ways. He pursued studies in
fields like Mineralogy, Botany,
Zoology, that reflects on his
deep interest in the natural
