Parenthetical Definition

Defining the word by providing synonym


term enclosed in parentheses ( ) to give a
short description, emphasize the word, or to
make it easy to understand.
Parenthetical Definition

The term that can be found in parenthesis


are the synonym of term written before
the parenthesis.
Sentence Definition

Defining the complex terms that uses a


complete sentence to explain the word or
phrase. It provides clear and concise
explanation of the word. Usually more than
one sentences.

Extended Dedinition

Word or phrase is defined with long,


paragraph definition that consider all sources
of information (description, casual discussion,
and classification).
Example:

Measles is an acute, highly infectus disease caused


by a virus. The illness is characterized by a cough,
fever, and maculopapular (raised red) rash. It has
the worldwide endemicity that are people
throughout the world are vulnerable to the
disease.

A definition that deals with the concept on


how you plan to measure variables or
describing what to do on your research.
TIPS for writing Operational Definition

1. Look over the written plan.


2. Identify and list variables.
3. Write clear and complete definition.
4. Check the definition by asking yourself "is it
reflected on the concept of my research
study" ?
Example:

"Depressive symptoms in adolescents are


operationally defined as a score of 20 or higher on the
Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), a standardized,
self-report questionnaire administered to participants
during the initial assessment session".
The BDI-II assesses symptoms such as:

- Sadness
- Loss of interest
- Changes in appetite
- Sleep disturbances
- Fatigue

A score of 20 or higher indicates moderate to severe


depressive symptoms
