What is IoT?
• "Internet of Things" means that devices or machines connected to
the Internet can exchange data with each other.

What is IoT?
• The Internet of Things represents devices that communicate with
each other through various communication protocols and form a
smart network by connecting to each other and sharing information.

Every object we use in our daily lives has a MAC and IP address and
they are constantly communicating with each other.

What is IoT?
• This concept, which was introduced by
Kevin Ashton in 1999, initially covered
devices that communicate with each
other via radio frequency thanks to RFID

tags, but with the developing technology,
the concept has reached a much wider
vision. This concept includes not only the
things in our homes or the traffic lights
on the road, but also the machines that
make production in factories and even
food. "Things" think and make decisions.

What is IoT?
• The IoT is a giant network of connected things and people – all of
which collect and share data about the way they are used and about
the environment around them.

11001010101010
• The idea of adding sensors and intelligence to basic objects was
discussed throughout the 1980s and 1990s. First example was
internet-connected vending machine.
• The progress was slow simply because the technology wasn't ready.
Chips were too big and bulky and there was no way for objects to
communicate effectively.

What is IoT?
• Cheap and enough powerful processors were needed before it finally
became costeffective to connect up billions of devices.
11001010101010
11001010101010
• The adoption of RFID tags -- low-power chips that can communicate
wirelessly -- solved some of this issue.
• The adoption of IPv6 -- which, among other things, should provide
enough IP addresses for every device the world. It was also a
necessary step for the IoT.
• As consumers, we all interact with these devices and they can receive
a lot of data from us even with minimal human intervention.

What is IoT?
• IoT can bring the efficiencies to physical manufacturing and
distribution.
11001010101010
11001010101010
• Millions of built-in web-enabled sensors around the world provide an
incredibly rich dataset that companies can use to collect data on the
security of their operations, track assets, and reduce manual
processes.
• IoT can easily be used to collect data about people's preferences and
behaviour, and this can have serious consequences for privacy and
security.
