The Catholic Church proclaims that human life is
sacred
and that the dignity of the human person is the
foundation
of a moral vision for society.
 The dignity of a human person is seen as flowing
from the person’s relationship with God and not a
result of some quality that human beings possess
independently
 This means people do not lose dignity due to
factors such as poverty, age, gender, disability,
Common Good is the sum total of
those conditions of social living
whereby men are enabled more fully
and more readily to achieve their own
perfection. *
 Here, the government is considered by the
Church as the privileged agent of the common
good.
UNIVERSAL DESTINATION
OF CREATED GOODS

The Earth is sacred. The environment is

God’s gift to everyone
 Creation has its own intrinsic value. We have a
responsibility to protect and to cherish the Earth’s
ecological diversity, beauty and life-sustaining
properties. Together, we must hold it in trust for future
generations. *
 The goods of the earth are intended by God for
the benefit of everyone. In our use of resources, we
must be guided by our concern for the welfare of

The state is an instrument to promote

human dignity, protect human rights, and
develop the common good.

 Subsidiarity holds that such functions of government

should be performed at the lowest level possible, as long
as they can be performed adequately. When they
cannot, higher levels of government must intervene. *

Each one of us has a right and a duty to

participate in the full range of activities
and institutions of social life, seeking
together the common good and well-being
of all – especially the poor and vulnerable.*
 Participation is expressed essentially in a series of activities
by means of which the citizen, either as an individual or in
association with others, whether directly or through
representation, contributes to the cultural, economic,

We are one human family whatever our

national, racial, ethnic, economic, and
ideological differences may be. We are all
interconnected and interdependent.
 Solidarity is a firm and persevering determination to
commit oneself to the common good; that is to say to
the good of all and of each individual, because we
are all really responsible for all. *

This principle does not intend that we should

focus on the poor to the exclusion of others, but
rather that we are called to prioritize those who
are in most need of our Solidarity. God’s love
is universal.

 The needs of the poor take priority over the desires of

the rich.*
