• Body language is type of a nonverbal
communication in which physical
behaviors, as opposed to words, are used
to express or convey the information.

• Such behavior includes facial expressions,


body posture, gestures, eye movement,
touch and the use of space.

person uses to communicate.

Eye Contact
Purpose of Eye Contact:
• Speaking Information.
• Showing Attention and Interest.
• Inviting and Controlling Interaction.
• Dominating, Threating, Influencing Others.
• Providing Feedback during Speech.
• Revealing Attitudes.

• Too much eye contact: dominance, lack of
respect, threat.

• Too little eye Contact: Not paying attention,


Impolite, insincere, shy.

• Withdrawing Eyes: Signal of Submission.

Gestures
“ Let your body talk on your behalf “
• Gestures are overt movements or actions using various
body parts. The use of the right gesture can reduce the
effort and time of communication while ensuring that
the message is conveyed clearly and effectively.

• Some Common Gestures:


• Shoulder Shrug: I don’t know.
• Puffed Chest: Pride or Achievement.
• Sucked stomach: I am not as fat as I Look.
• Finger Crossing: Protection

More common gestures:
• Nose tapping: Mind your own business.
• Thumbs Up: Good to go, Best luck, Victory.
• Rubbing Palm Together: Positive Expectation.
• Nose touching : is a discomfort gesture linked to
anxiety, can provide clue that a person is lying,
disguising own words.

• Thumb and finger rub: Money Expectancy.
• Hands on Hips: Aggressive, Achiever stance.
• Steepling Hands: Confidence, often used by
those in leadership position.

Some more common gestures:
• Finger in Mouth :Needs reassurance, making
decision.
• Chin stroking : Making decision, Evaluating.
• Eye rub: Avoid eye contact, Lying.
• Mouth Guard : Suppressing deceitful words, telling
lies.

Posture and Stance
• Posture is an important part of body language.

• Posture can convey information about:


• Interpersonal relations.
• Personality traits (ex: confidence,
submissiveness, openness,..).
• Social standing.
• Current emotional states.

Some Common Postures:
• Arms folded across chest: Unsympathetic,
unfriendly, anxiety.
• Arms held loose: Open positive attitude
• Upright posture: High status, I’m the boss.
• Bowing Head: Lower status.
• Sideway leaning: Relaxation, friendliness
• Self wrapping: Withdrawal, self protection.
• Slouching with forward lean: Lowliness,
depression.

Proxemics
• Proxemics is the study of personal space and
how we use it.

The four main categories of proxemics:


• Intimate touching: 0- 45 cm
• Personal: 45cm- 1.2m
• Social: 1.2m- 3.6m
• Public : more than 3.7m

Reactions to invasion of your space:


• Feels uncomfortable
• Feel troubled
• Get defensive
• Become Aggressive
• Retaliate

Haptics
Communicating through touch is another important non-
verbal communication.

Body contact :accidental


Touch: deliberate

Types of touch:
• Functional/ Professional (ex: handshake)
• Social
• Genial/ Friendly
• Passionate

Kind of touch depends on various factors:
• Which part of body is touched
(voluntary/involuntary)
• How long touch lasted
• Pressure used
• Movement after contact
• Mood while touching
• Relation between two persons

Touch can be used to communicate affection,


familiarity, sympathy, and other emotions.
