Preparation for the Coming of Christ Second Coming Gospel Passage of the Coming of Jesus The Annunciation Luke 1:26–38: The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will conceive Jesus, the Son of God.“And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High” (Luke 1:31–32). Gospel Passage of the Coming of Jesus The Visitation Luke 1:39–45: Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist. Elizabeth recognizes Mary as the mother of the Lord.“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” (Luke 1:42). Gospel Passage of the Coming of Jesus Joseph’s Dream Matthew 1:18–25: An angel appears to Joseph in a dream, telling him not to fear taking Mary as his wife.“She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). The Greenery Symbolism: • The evergreen branches (usually pine or holly) represent eternal life. • Even in the cold, dark winter months, the greenery remains vibrant, symbolizing the hope of Christ, the "light" that brings life and salvation to the world. The CandlesThe Advent wreath typically has four candles, one for each week of Advent. Traditionally, these are three purple candles and one pink candle, each with its own significance: A. First Purple Candle (Hope)Symbolism:Known as the Prophet’s Candle, this candle represents hope.It symbolizes the hope for the coming Messiah and reflects the prophecies from the Old Testament, particularly the prophecy from Isaiah about the coming of a Savior.It encourages us to reflect on the hope of Christ’s birth and His eventual second coming. Second Purple Candle (Peace)Symbolism:Known as the Bethlehem Candle, this candle represents peace.It recalls the peaceful atmosphere of Bethlehem where Jesus was born.It invites us to reflect on the peace Christ offers, both to the world and to our hearts, as we prepare for His coming. Third Pink Candle (Joy)Symbolism:Known as the Shepherd’s Candle, this candle represents joy.It is lit on the third Sunday of Advent, also called Gaudete Sunday (from the Latin Gaudete, meaning "Rejoice").This Sunday emphasizes the joy we feel in the anticipation of Christ’s birth, and this pink candle is a reminder to rejoice, even in the midst of our Advent preparation. .Fourth Purple Candle (Love) • Symbolism: • Known as the Angel’s Candle, this candle represents love. • It reflects the love of God in sending His Son into the world and calls us to reflect on God’s great love for humanity. • The angels' proclamation of peace and goodwill to all people at Christ’s birth emphasizes the love God has for us.
