Comparing Numbers

Comparing numbers determines if

number is less than, greater than, or
equal to another based on their
values. In math, the symbols used to
compare numbers are < for less
than, > for greater than, and = for
equal.
Example:

1. 6 100 is greater than 2 165.

In symbol,it is written as:
6 100 > 2 165.
2. 503is less than 2 165.
In symbol, it is written as:
503 < 2 165
3. 503 is equal to 503.
In symbol, it is written as:
503 = 503
Another way of comparing numbers is
by using a number line. Let us try to
plot 8 110, 8 200 and 8 820.

The numbers on the given segment of the number lines are 8 110, 8 200 and 8 820.
The leftmost number is 8 110 which is less than 8 200. The rightmost number is 8 820
which is greater than 8 200. Take note that the number going to the rightmost direction
has a greater value than the number to the leftmost direction in the number line.
Study and compare the numbers
below:

Let us have more examples. This time,

we will focus on larger numbers up to
1. 245,202 254,291
Rewrite the numbers in the Place Value chart below.
Then, compare them using the symbols
1. 245,202 254,291 Since the given numbers have
the same number of digits and their highest place is a
hundred thousand, we compare their digits from the left
most part.
The next place value is ten thousand
places. Digit “4” is less than digit “5”;
hence,
245,202 is less than (>) 254,291.
2. 115,936 82,776
The given numbers do not have the same
number of digits. In 115,936, the digits go
further to the left, with a hundred thousand
as the highest place value. In 82,776, the
highest place value is ten thousand.
Therefore, 115,936 is greater than (>) 82,776.
3. 78,934 78,934

It can be noticed that the given have the same

number of digits, with their
highest place value being ten thousand.
More so, all their digits are
the same; hence, they are equal.
Grade 4: Activity

Compare the numbers using >, < and = .

1. 25 716 28 290
2. 417 567 265 715
3. 18 360 10 000+ 8 000 + 300 + 60 + 2
4. 67 629 60 000+7 000 + 600 + 80 + 9
5. 79 745 79 745
Grade 3: Activity
Read and answer the problem below. Compare the number using <, > and =.

1. Assuming that there are 1 567 school children at Balugo Elementary School while Capoocan
Central School has 300 more than the population of Balugo Elementary School. What is the
total population of Capoocan Central School?
1 567 1 867
2. Roel collected 1 625 stamps on April and 1 256 stamps on May. In what month did Roel
collect more stamps?
1 625 1 256
3. Arnie and Darlyn went to the shore to pick pebbles. Arnie Picked 3 000 +100 + 60 + 7 pebbles
while Darlyn had 3 167. Who has more pebbles?
3 000 + 100 + 60 + 7 3 167
4. Zellian counted 4 057 marbles while Mark has 3 126 marbles. Who has more marbles?
Grade 4: Assessment

Compare the following using the symbols <, >, or =.

1. 567,123 56,723
2. 1,000,000 989,231
3. 872,912 872,921
4. 42,788 42,887
