Research problem and Designing the

Title of research

Project Report A.Y 2023-24

Definition and meaning of Research
• Definition: (Grinnell 1993: 4)
A research is a structured inquiry that utilizes acceptable
scientific methodology to solve problems and creates new
knowledge that is generally applicable (1993:4).
Definition and meaning of Research
• Lundberg (1942) : Scientific methods consist
of systematic observation, classification and
interpretation of data.
Research: a way of thinking
• Research is not only a set of skills, but also a way of thinking.
• You usually question what you observe, make an attempt to further
explore, understand and explain your observations, and draw
conclusions and inferences to enhance your practice skills and
their knowledge base.
• It is looking at your practice or work situation inquisitively,
critically and analytically to gain an in-depth knowledge of its
rationale, relevance, effectiveness and efficiency.
• You develop an attitude that encourages you to challenge different
aspects of your work situation, to question their purpose, relevance
and validity, to find their strengths and weaknesses, and to
investigate the possibilities and ways for further improvements and
refinements.
Research Process A quick Glance
In this chapter you will learning about
• The eight-step model for carrying out research
• The different phases of the process
Phase A: Deciding what to research
• Step I: Formulating a research problem
Phase B: Planning a research study
• Step Il: Conceptualizing a research design
• Step III: Constructing an instrument for data collection
• Step IN: Selecting a sample
• Step V: Writing a research proposal
Phase C: Conducting a research study
• Step VI: Collecting data
Step VII: Processing and displaying data
• Step VIII: Writing a research report
The Research Problem
• A question that you want to be answered.
• Any assumption you want to challenge or
investigate
• Basic requirements
– Subject knowledge
– Research methodology
Importance of a research problem
• Identification of destination
• It can be defined in a simple way or with
complexity
• It determines the entire research design
• The input-output relationship
• Provides clarity in process
• Clearer the problem, clearer will be the
process.
Sources of research problems
• 4 P’s -
– People
– Problems
– Programmes
– Phenomena
Consideration in selecting research problem

• Interest
• Sufficient knowledge
• Measurable concepts
• Level of expertise
• Relevance
• Availability of data
• Ethical issued
Steps in formulating a research
problem/question
• Step 1
– Identify broader subject or area of interest to you

• Step 2
– Dissect the broad area into subareas.

• Step 3
– Select what interests you the most from the subareas
Steps in formulating a research
problem/question
• Step 4
– Raise research questions

• Step 5
– Formulate objectives
Steps in formulating a research
problem/question
• Example:
• Step 1
– Main subject – Social media

• Step 2
– Dissect subareas – Photobased, Video based,
chat apps, Virtual Reality
Steps in formulating a research
problem/question
• Step 3
– Select subareas – Photobased social media

• Step 4
– Raise research questions
• What is the impact of it on population?
• Why is it used?
• Is it beneficial for hotels?
• How effective is the use of a social media for hotels?
Steps in formulating a research
problem/question
• Step 5
– Formulate objectives which will answer your
research problem areas.
Formulating Objectives

The aim is usually made up of three parts that answer

the below questions:

1. Why is this research required?

2. What is this research about?

3. How are you going to do it?

Characteristics of research objectives
Each of your research objectives should be SMART:

 Specific –there should not be any ambiguity in the action you are going to undertake. It
should be focused and well defined.

 Measurable – it should be clear as how will you are going to measure progress and
determine when your action is achieved.

 Achievable –you should have the support, resources and facilities required to carry out the
action.

 Relevant –the action should be essential to the achievement of your research aim

 Time bound – one must realistically complete the action in the available time alongside
your other research tasks.
Tasks performed by research objectives
• For understanding and organizing the information
(Understanding) following verbs can be used: describe,
summarize, identify, review, explore and discover.

• For solving problems using information (Applying) we can use

the verbs like relate, calculate, determine, establish,
demonstrate, apply, interpret and estimate.

• For further breaking down the information into pieces

(Synthesizing) the verbs can be assemble, undertake,
prepare, collect, design, formulate and propose.
continued
• For reaching conclusions from evidence (Analyzing) we
may use the verbs compare, inspect, examine, analyze,
verify, test and arrange.
• For judging the merit of gathered information
(Evaluating) we can use verbs select, conclude, evaluate,
recommend, appraise and assess.
• Last but not the least the objectives are a numbered list of
statements or questions that help your research in referring
to a specific point or angle of your research. The
construction of research around the objectives will give your
research a clarity it deserves.
Objectives
• Example :
– To study the concept of photo-based social media.
– To find different photo-based social media
platforms used by hotels
– To compare different photo-based social media
platforms used by hotel.
– To evaluate the performance of the best photo-
based social media platform for hotels.
Forming a research title
Should answer following questions-
• What field/subject is covered in the research?
– The title should have a clearity about topic
– No more than one topic/subject at a time
• Where the study is going to be conducted?
– It should clearly state the area/ geographical
boundaries of a research
– It should include name of the location
Forming a research title
• When will be the research done?
– Should have a time-line
– Does it consider present time or past phenomena?
• Who is being studied?
– Should include the population in various ways like
gender, age group, specific groups, markets, etc.
Forming a research title
• What is the main purpose of the study?
– Should include the main purpose of the study
– What do you want to achieve? – only study or
comparion or effectiveness or impact or case
based

Example: A study on the impact of customer

review and feedbacksnon travelagency
business.
Activity
• Formulate a research problem.
• Form at least 3 objectives
• Formulate a title for a research question.
• Literature Review ( Minimum five ,using
keywords in the Research Title)
