Regression Analysis and Determination

The document provides an overview of regression analysis, a statistical method for examining relationships between variables. It discusses types of regression, including simple and multiple linear regression, as well as non-linear regression. Additionally, it outlines the steps for conducting regression analysis and provides examples illustrating the prediction of dependent variables based on independent variables.

• Example of Simple Linear Regression
Introduction

• Regression analysis is a statistical method used to

examine the relationship between two or more variables,
determining how the dependent variable changes when
any one of the independent variables is varied.
• Dependent variable: Trying to predict or explain(Y)
• Independent variable: that is used to predict or explain
the changes in the dependent variable (X)
Examples
• Predicting salary based on years of experience
• Predicting exam scores based on study hours
Types of Regression Analysis

1. Linear Regression

• Simple Linear Regression

Examines the relationship between two variables by fitting a linear
equation to the observed data.
• Multiple Linear Regression:
Extends simple linear regression by using multiple independent
variables to predict the dependent variable.

2. Non-Linear Regression
Nonlinear regression is a statistical technique that helps describe
nonlinear relationships in experimental data.
Steps in Conducting Regression Analysis

• Equation of linear regression: Y= mx + b

• Y represents the dependent variable
• X represents the independent variable
• m is the slope of the line (how much Y changes
for a unit change in X).
• b is the intercept (the value of Y when X is 0).
Steps in Conducting Regression Analysis

•Data Collection
•Calculation
•Prediction
•Visualization
Example 1
Example 2

• Dataset: Predicting reaction rate based on

temperature
• Variables:
• Dependent (Y): Reaction rate (mol/L/s)
• Independent (X): Temperature (°C)

Data Points:
• (20°C, 0.5)
• (30°C, 0.7)
• (40°C, 0.9)
Graph Description:
•The scatter plot shows data points for temperature and reaction rate.
•The regression line indicates the predicted relationship: as temperature increases, reaction rate increases.
