exemplification/classification
LET’S HAVE A RECAP!

• What is Patterns of
Development?
• What is Narration?
• What is Description?
Conduct a brainstorming session where students list
different patterns of development they know.

QUESTIONS:
1. Can you think of examples in your life where you’ve
used examples to explain your point more clearly?
2. What is the purpose of using examples in writing?
3. How does exemplification differ from other patterns
of development?
A SHORT PARAGRAPH THAT USES EXEMPLIFICATION

Eating healthy foods is essential for a strong body.

For example, vegetables like spinach and broccoli
are packed with essential nutrients. Fruits, such as
apples and oranges, provide vitamins that boost the
immune system. Whole grains and lean proteins,
like chicken and beans, also contribute to a
balanced diet.

1. What is the main idea of the paragraph?

2. How do the examples support the main idea?
GROUP ACTIVITY

•Divide students into 4 groups.

Provide each group with a paragraph
written in the exemplification
pattern.
•Groups identify the main idea,
examples, and how the examples
are connected to the main idea.
GROUP ACTIVITY

Example 1: Benefits of Regular Exercise

Regular exercise offers numerous benefits that positively
impact both physical and mental health. For instance,
engaging in physical activities such as jogging, swimming, or
yoga helps improve cardiovascular health by strengthening
the heart and lowering blood pressure. Exercise also
supports weight management; activities like cycling or
aerobics burn calories and promote a healthy metabolism.
Additionally, regular workouts enhance mental well-being by
releasing endorphins, which reduce stress and anxiety.
These examples demonstrate how exercise contributes to a
healthier and more balanced lifestyle.
GROUP ACTIVITY

Example 2: The Importance of Time Management

Effective time management is crucial for achieving success
in various areas of life. For example, students who plan their
schedules well can allocate sufficient time for studying,
completing assignments, and relaxing, leading to better
academic performance. Similarly, professionals who
prioritize tasks and set deadlines are more likely to meet
their goals and avoid last-minute stress. Moreover, time
management allows individuals to pursue hobbies and spend
quality time with loved ones, improving overall life
satisfaction. These examples highlight how managing time
efficiently can lead to personal and professional growth.
GROUP ACTIVITY

Example 3: The Value of Volunteering

Volunteering provides countless benefits to individuals and
communities alike. For instance, working at a local food
bank helps address hunger in underserved areas, ensuring
that families receive the nutrition they need. Similarly,
tutoring children from low-income families can improve
their academic performance and boost their confidence.
Volunteering also benefits the volunteer by developing new
skills, such as teamwork and communication, while
fostering a sense of purpose. These examples illustrate how
volunteering creates positive ripple effects for both the
giver and the receiver.

Example 4: Benefits of Regular Exercise

Regular exercise offers numerous benefits that positively
impact both physical and mental health. For instance,
engaging in physical activities such as jogging, swimming, or
yoga helps improve cardiovascular health by strengthening
the heart and lowering blood pressure. Exercise also
supports weight management; activities like cycling or

Additionally, regular workouts enhance mental well-being by

These examples demonstrate how exercise contributes to a

1.What examples are used to
support the main idea?
2.How effective are these examples
in clarifying the main point?
Exemplification

- An exemplification pattern
presents the general statement
and then provides specific and
concrete examples to expound on
the main idea. Simply put, this
pattern is used to provide an
example of something.
Steps in writing an
exemplification paragraph
Steps:
1.Identify the main idea or topic.
2.Decide on the examples to
support the idea.
3.Arrange the examples logically
(e.g., from general to specific).

While the internet offers so many benefits to man, it also has its
downsides. One of these is phishing, which refers to the act of
obtaining personal information, such as passwords and credit
card details, through online means. In other words, phishing is a
form of cybercrime. As an example, let us consider the case of
Mr. X. he received an email stating that his Gmail account has
been compromised and that he needed to click a link to update
personal information. If Mr. X clicks on the link, his personal
information will be illegally acquired by cybercriminals.

 What is the structure of an
exemplification/classification?
 What are the steps in writing an
exemplification/classification?
ASSESSMENT
Directions: The students are tasked to
write and organize these ideas into a well-
structured exemplification/classification
pattern of development. They have the
freedom to choose a topic they want. They
will be graded based on the given rubric.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY
Directions: Assign students to write a
short blog or social media post using the
exemplification/classification pattern on
a topic of their choice. Alternatively,
have them present a speech using
examples to support their points. They
will be graded based on the given rubric.

Oceans and lakes have much in common, but they are also quite
different. Both are bodies of water, but oceans are very large
bodies of salt water, while lakes are much smaller bodies of fresh
water. Lakes are usually surrounded by land, while oceans are
what surround continents. Both have plants and animals living in
them. The ocean is home to the largest animals on the planet,
whereas lakes support much smaller forms of life. When it is time
for a vacation, both will make a great place to visit and enjoy

IDENTIFY WHAT PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT:
1. Ondoy began to develop from an active low pressure
area to a tropical cyclone on September 24, 2009. The
following day, PAGASA raised storm signals all over the
Philippine archipelago. At that point, signal no. 2 was
raised in Catanduanes and other parts of Luzon. By
Saturday morning, reports of flooding started to pour
in. Meanwhile, President Arroyo declared a state of
calamity in Metro Manila. Immediately after President
Arroyo’s declaration, various government agencies
began the rescue and relief operations. As soon as
Typhoon Ondoy exited the Philippines, more and more
relief and rescue operations were conducted.

2. A laptop is one of the greatest inventions of the
modern era. It is a lightweight device that can save a
vast amount of information. The screen, touchpad,
speakers, keyboard, battery, and AC adapter are the
basic parts of a laptop. The most noticeable part of a
laptop is its screen, which is responsible for displaying
information. Another major component is the keyboard.
On it are the keys needed to enter data into the
computer. Near the keyboard you will find a smooth,
rectangular surface which acts like a desktop computer
mouse – this is the touchpad. At the bottom part of this
rectangular surface, you will see buttons that operate
like a mouse button.
IDENTIFY WHAT PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT:

Below the keyboard and touchpad, built into the laptop

itself are the speakers which allow you to hear sounds
and music. Found at the back of the keyboard is the
battery; it serves as the lifeline of the computer. Finally,
a laptop also comes with an AC adapter which charges
the battery and serves as the source of electric power
when it is plugged in.

students to succeed academically. For instance,
setting a daily schedule helps prioritize tasks,
ensuring that urgent assignments are completed
on time. Additionally, students who manage
their time well often find opportunities to engage
in extracurricular activities, such as joining clubs
or sports teams, without compromising their
academic performance. A clear example of

4. Procrastination is the act of delaying or
postponing tasks that need to be accomplished,
often choosing less important activities instead.
It is commonly defined as a habitual or
intentional avoidance of work or responsibilities.
For example, a person may procrastinate by
scrolling through social media or watching
television when they should be studying for an
exam. This behavior is often linked to feelings of
anxiety, fear of failure, or lack of motivation, and
it can negatively impact DEFINITION
productivity and
