INTERPRETATION & REPORT
WRITING
► MEANING OF INTERPRETATION
► Interpretation refers to the task of drawing inferences from the analysis of the
collected data or facts
► One aspect of interpretation is the effort to establish continuity in research
through linking the results of a given study with those of other
► Second aspect of interpretation is the establishment of some explanatory
concepts
► Interpretation is concerned with relationships within the collected data and the
extension of study beyond the collected data as well
► Interpretation is a device using which factors that explain observed data can be
better understood and provides theoretical conception that acts as a guide for
further research
INTERPRETATION & REPORT
WRITING
► WHY IS INTERPRETATION IMPORTANT?
► The usefulness and utility of research findings lie in proper interpretation
► It is the basic component of research process
► In exploratory study, a researcher does not start with any hypotheses, the findings
of such a study have to be interpreted on a post-factum basis and is technically
described as post-factum interpretation
► Interpretation is not easy and requires great skill and dexterity
► It is an art that is learnt through practice and experience
INTERPRETATION & REPORT
WRITING
► TECHNIQUES OF INTERPRETATION
► Generalizations and concepts – reasonable explanations of the relations
► Extraneous information, also known as, secondary data to be considered while
interpreting the results
► Consulting someone to give a frank opinion about the interpretations for omissions
or logical arguments will result in correct interpretation, leading to enhancing
utility of the research
► Interpretation to be done after considering all the relevant facts to make it more
accurate
INTERPRETATION & REPORT
WRITING
► PRECAUTIONS IN INTERPRETATION
► The data should be appropriate, adequate and trustworthy for drawing inferences
► The data reflects good homogeneity
► The data is statistically analyzed
► Avoid false generalization or broad generalizations
► In statistical results if the hypothesis is accepted then ‘being in accord’ should be
used rather than ‘confirming the validity of the hypothesis’
► Interpretation depends very much on analysis and not separately
► Limitations of the interpretation of the results, if any, should be invariably specified
► Important facts should be brought out keeping in sight the goal of the research
► Initial hypothesis 🡨--🡪 Empirical observations 🡨--🡪 Theoretical concepts
