Assessment-of-Self-and-Family

The document discusses the assessment of growth and development in children, highlighting key milestones and factors that affect these processes. It details various methods of assessment, including anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, and head circumference, and emphasizes the importance of growth charts for monitoring malnutrition. Additionally, it covers behavioral development across motor, language, adaptive, and socio-personal domains, encouraging parental awareness of developmental milestones.

ASSESSMENT OF

SELF AND FAMILY

ASSESSMENT OF SELF AND
FAMILY

Monitoring growth and

development
 Mile stone
Weight measurement
Social development
CONTI ....

GROWTH:-
Growth is increasing in physical size of the
body.Maximum growth of brain is noticed from 1-6
years.maximum general growth is observed during
6-12 years. Reproductive growth is observed during
13 -18 years.
DEVLOPMENT:-
Devlopment refer to increase in skill and
function. Growth and development includes not
only physical aspects but also intellectual ,
emotional and social aspects.
CONTI ...

FACTOR AFFECTING GROWTH AND

DEVLOPMENT:-
1. Genetic inheritance
2. Nutrition
3. Age
4. Sex
5. Physical surroundings
6. Psychological factors
7. Infection and parasites
8. Economic factors
CONTI...

• Method of assessment:-
Growth and devlopment can be
assessed through physical and nutritional
assessment. The physical assessment including
the following anthropometric measurements.
1. Height
2. Weight
3. Head circumference
4. Chest circumference
5. Mid-arm circumference
WEIGHT

• This is one of the most important

measurements in nutritional assessment.
• It is an Important variable used in equations
predicting macronutrient and fluid
requirements and a valuable index in acute
malnutrition.
HEIGHT

• Together with wt and other

body size measurements,
length is a sensitive and
commonly used indicator
of growth and
development
which can be assessed by
comparing length-for-age
and weight-for-length.
HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE

• This is an important measurement as it is

closely related to brain size.
• HC rapidly increases during the first year
but is much slower by 36 months.
• HC-for-age can be used to
detect severe chronic
protein-energy malnutrition
in children < 2 years.
MID ARM CIRCUMFERENCE

• The arm contains both subcutaneous fat and

muscle; therefore a decrease in MUAC(also
referred to as Mid Arm Circumference [MAC])
may reflect either a reduction in muscle mass,
subcutaneous tissue or both.
CHEST CIRCUMFERANCE

• Landmarks Measure horizontally around the upper body at the

level of the nipples or at the level just below the scapular angles
• Position The patient should stand upright with the arms down at
the sides. The measurement should be made during mid-
expiration. Infants should be measured lying supine, in mid-
expiration.
GROWTH CHART OR ROAD TO
HEALTH CHART

• This chart was first designed by David Morley and

later modified by WHO. It is a visible display of the
child's physical growth and development. There
are different types of growth chart is use in India.
• The growth chart recommend by the government
of India shows three degrees of malnutrition ,
1. First degree ( grade-1)
2. Second degree ( grade-2)
3. Third degree ( grade -3 )
CONTI...

• According to this classification , if a

child's weight is between the 70% to
80% it indicates first degree or mild
malnutrition.
• If the weight is between 60% to 70% it
indicates second degree malnutrition or
moderate malnutrition.
• If the weight is below the 60% it
indicates third degree or severe
CONTI...

∆ Uses of growth chart are as follows

✓Growth chart give great value for growth monitoring
✓It helps to identify high risk children e.g.
malnutrition.
✓ mother can be educated in the care of her own child

and participate in growth monitoring.

✓It heps the health worker to refer the child earlier.
✓It can be used to teach the mother.
DEVLOPMENT

The behavioural devlopment is assessed in four areas,

i.e.
1. Motor devlopment
2. Language development
3. Adaptive devlopment
4. Socio- personal development
Parent should be taught about the mile stones of
growth in children so that any deviation from normol
can be identified early and promote action taken. This
applies not only to physical development but to mental
and social aspects as well.
