Growth is a physical change that can be weighed and measured.

Development is psychological and social changes to the individual such

as behaviours and thinking patterns.

Growth and development are two complimentary processes that

together make up the individual.
Assessment of development
Development assessment is a part of clinical examination. It is based on
observation related to achievements which are normally expected at a
given chronologic age. Four major criteria for behavior are;
1. Motor development
2. Adoptive or cognitive development
3. Language development
4. Personal or social development
1.Motor development: This includes gross motor activity comprising
control of head, trunk and extremities.
Fine motor activity pertains to control of the fine movements of the
fingers.
Motor control indicates neurologic integrity. Motor abilities are used to
perform actions in response to environmental stimuli. This includes the
manipulation of objects.
2. Adoptive or cognitive development: The cognitive process begins
with perception. It relates to past experience and involves memory. The
next step is the generation of ideas and the performance of actions.
Intellectual status can be judged by maturation of cognitive or adoptive
behavior.
• Language: Language development is related to the perception of
sound and production of words and language is in the form of speech

Personnel or social behavior: This is widely variable, depending upon

social and environmental factors. However, some personnel factors like
control of bowel and bladder are related to neurologic integrity and
have established value.
