INTRODUCTION

Hello everyone..
We are from YASHWANT RAO CHAVAN
INSTITUTE OF POLYTECHNIC, BEED
I am VAISHNAVI RAKH
I am NANDINI LADDA
Today we are going to present paper
presentation on
E-WASTE CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Introduction
• As you all know In today’s era major
discussion or major conflicts and problems
occuring to every organism living here is
because of many issues
• So out of the following aspects mainly E-
WASTE is the major problem.
• Ok If we are on the point E-WASTE we need to
know it in deep.
WASTE
• India is vast country and we indians are suffering with major
problems of 3P :- POLLUTION, POPULATION, POVERTY.
• What is POLLUTION? A wrong substance in a wrong place and
in a wrong proportion is called as pollution and any agent that
brings out pollution are called as pollutants.
• These pollutants drastically disturbs delicate balance of our
ecosystem as we are facing with problems of global warming
which are results of vehicle & industries…. As atmosphere is
heavily burdened with gases as CFC, CH4, etc so rainfall
pattern completely disturbs.
• Pollution occurs due to generation of waste.
• So talking about waste it reminds what is waste? Anything
that can be removed out after its primary use it is called as
waste.
Sources of waste
• 1. Domestic activities:- leftover food
• 2. Agricultural waste :- Excessive use of insectiside fertilizers
• 3. Industrial waste :- Effluent release by industries in water
bodies
• 4. Radio active waste :- Automic explosion
• 5. E- WASTE
• All these waste causes pollution of either Air, Water & Soil
• It seriously disturbs health of not only human being but all
other living organism and plants too.
What is E-WASTE?
• E-WASTE is an abbreviation of electronic
waste.
• Rapid growth of technology, upgradation of
technical innovations, a high rate in
electronics industry have led to one of the
fastest growing waste streams in the world.
Electronic equipments
• End of life such as :

• Refrigerator , Washing machine , Computers,

Printers , Televisions , Mobiles, Ipods , etc.

• Many of which contain Toxic materials.

COMPOSITION OF E-WASTE
• Consists of –
• FERROUS AND NON FERROUS Metals Plastics,
Glass, Wood etc.
• IRON & STEEL – 50%
• PLASTICS – 21%
• NON FERROUS METAL – 13%
• Mercury, Arsenic, Lead, etc……
E-WASTE GENERATION
• About 20-50 million tonnes of E-Waste are
disposed each year.
• Which accounts for 5% of all Municipal Solid
waste.
• There are 10 states that contribute to 70% of
total E-WASTE generated in the country.
• 65 cities generate more than 60% of total E-
waste in INDIA.
GENERATION IN INDIA
• Among top 10 cities generating E-WASTE, MUMBAI ranks 1st
followed by
DELHI,BENGALURU,CHENNAI,KOLKATA,AHMEDABAD,HYDERA
BAD,SURAT & NAGPUR.
• Main source of E-WASTE in INDIA are the government, public
& private sectors. Hence all the sectors aren’t safe every
sector is responsible for E-WASTE.
• Even our household sector, we cannot say it is not
responsible, it also contributes in generating the E- WASTE.
• Contribution of Household – 15%
• Contribution of sectors – 70%
E-WASTE VOLUME
• Television – 68%
• Desktop Server – 27%
• Imports – 2%
• Mobile – 1%
• How much waste is in 500 million computers –
• PLASTIC – 6.32 BILLION POUNDS
• LEAD – 1.58 BILLION POUNDS
• CADMIUM – 3 MILLION POUNDS
• CHROMIUM – 1.9 MILLION POUNDS
• MERCURY – 0.632 MILLION POUNDS
Dealing with E-WASTE
• Currently, around the world, volume of computers and other
E-WASTES temporarily stored for recycling or disposal is
growing at an alarming rate causing various environmental
and health hazard to any community.
WHY????
• Do you ever think why the problem of E-WASTE is growing so much?
• Searching on this I found a very logical answer about it….
• Growing problem of E-WASTE :-

• i) INCREASING DEVICE , Consumption of smartphones, computers, other

electronic devices continues to rise globally.
• ii) SHORTENED PRODUCT , Lifecycle & rapid race of technological
innovation contribute to devices becoming asset quickly, adding to e-
waste stream.
• iii) LACK OF PROPER COLLECTION & RECYCLING, In many parts of the
world , infrastructure & awareness result in E-WASTE ending up in
landfills or being disposed improperly.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
• Impacts of E-WASTE :-
• i) POLLUTION :- E-WASTE contains dangerous substances like lead,
mercury, which harms the environment, contaminating soil & water
resources.
• ii) CLIMATE CHANGE :- Removal of raw materials for electronic devices &
the manufacturing process contribute to greenhouse gas emissions &
climate change.
• iii) RESOURCE DEPLETION :- Production of electronic devices relies on
natural resources, & improper E-WASTE management.
HEALTH CONCERNS
• i) exposure to toxic substances
• ii) air pollution
• iii) Contaminated water

• PROBLEMS because of this :-

• i) Respiratory illness , neurological disorder & illness
• ii) Risk of cardio disease
Challenges in E-WASTE
• 1. LACK OF INFRASTRUCTURE
• Many countries lack collecting, transporting, processing E-WASTE,
resulting in illegal dumping and environmental damage.
• 2. Lack of Awareness & Education
• Many people are unaware of dangers of E-WASTE & the importance of
proper disposal.
• 3. Financial problems
• E-WASTE management requires significant financial investments, which
can be a challenge for developing countries.
• 4. ILLEGAL TRADE
• Dumping of E-WASTE in developing countries & health risks.
SOLUTIONS FOR E-WASTE
• Innovative solutions for E-WASTE:-
• 1. ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION
• It enhance E-WASTE sorting, material recovery process, increasing safety.
• 2. DATA DRIVEN E-WASTE MANAGEMENT
• Used to track E-WASTE flows, identify hotspots and recycling
• 3. EXTENDED PRODUCER RESPONSIBILTY
• Responsible for end-of-life management of their products, reduce E-
WASTE generation.
• 4. PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP
• Collaboration between governments, businesses, NGO’S , promote E-
WASTE management
3R’S
• So as you all know if I’m talking about 4R so:
• 4R are REDUCE,REUSE,RECYCLE
• Reduce :- to minimize the use of any equipment’s which isn’t
necessary or needed.
• Reuse :- to use the equipment again and again instead of
throwing it as a waste. For example, if the mobile battery isn’t
working do not throw it instead replace the battery with a
new battery.
• Recycle :- recycle mainly we should use in notebooks,
magazines, cardboard, etc. we can use the magazines again
like a cover for a table.
PROCESS OF RECYCLING AND RECOVERY

• Now as we have seen the main 3R’s, recovery is also main.

• Process goes like,
• 1. COLLECTION AND SORTING
• E-waste is collected and sorted into different categories based on materials &
components.
• 2. Pre-Treatment is given
• Separate harmful materials which are toxic from valuable one.
• 3. Material Recovery
• Valuable materials such as gold, copper, silver are extracted and recycled.
• 4. Disposal of Hazardous
• Waste is disposed of safely and responsibly according to regulations and
environmental standards.
