Triangles and Congruent Triangles

The document provides an overview of triangles, defining them as polygons with three sides and angles, and categorizing them based on side lengths (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and angles (acute, right, obtuse). It also explains the Triangle Inequality Theorem and introduces congruent triangles, which are identical in shape and size, along with the criteria for their congruence (SSS, ASA, AAS, HL). The content is prepared by Benjie R. Alulod Jr.

TRIANGLES AND

CONGRUENT
TRIANGLES
What is
Triangle?
Triangle
A triangle is a polygon with three sides and three
angles.

Triangles have different names based on their side

lengths and angles.
Types of Triangles
based on their Sides
Equilateral Triangle

An equilateral triangle has

three equal sides,
meaning all the sides are
the same length.
Isosceles Triangle

An isosceles triangle has

two equal sides, or two
sides with the same
length.
Scalene Triangle

A scalene triangle has no

equal sides. All the sides
are different lengths.
Types of Triangles
based on their Angles
Acute Triangle

All three angles are less

than 90 degrees.
Right Triangle

One angle is exactly 90

degrees.
Obtuse Triangle

One angle is greater than

90 degrees.
The Triangle Inequality Theorem states that the sum of
the lengths of any two sides of a triangle must be greater
than the length of the third side. This can be represented
mathematically as:

(a+b>c)
(a+c>b)
(b+c>a)
What is
Congruent Triangle?
CONGRUENT TRIANGLE

Congruent triangles are triangles that are

identical in shape and size, meaning they have
equal corresponding sides and angles.
CRITERIA FOR
CONGRUENCE
Side-Side-Side (SSS):

If the three sides of one triangle are

equal to the three sides of another
triangle, the triangles are congruent.
Angle-Side-Angle (ASA):

If two angles and the included side of

one triangle are equal to two angles and
the included side of another triangle, the
triangles are congruent.
Angle-Angle-Side (AAS):

If two angles and a non-included side of

one triangle are equal to two angles and
a corresponding non-included side of
another triangle, the triangles are
congruent.
Hypotenuse-Leg (HL):

This criterion applies specifically to right

triangles. If the hypotenuse and one leg of
one right triangle are equal to the
hypotenuse and one leg of another right
triangle, they are congruent.
