Related Theories
Darwinian Theory
Darwinian evolutionary history of our artistic and aesthetic tastes. The
experience of beauty is one component in a whole series of Darwinian adaptations.
Beauty is an adaptive effect which we extend and intensify in the creation and
enjoyment of works of art and entertainment. People agree that paintings or movies
or music are beautiful because their cultures determine a uniformity of aesthetic
taste.
Kant’s Theory
Kant argues that beauty is equivalent neither to utility nor perfection, but is still
purposive. Beauty in nature, then, will appear as purposive with respect to our
faculty of judgment, but its beauty will have no ascertainable purpose – that is, it is
not purposive with respect to determinate cognition. Indeed, this is why beauty is
pleasurable since, Kant argues, pleasure is defined as a feeling that arises on the
achievement of a purpose, or at least the recognition of a purposiveness.
