INTRODUCTION TO POLYMERIZATION
• WHAT IS POLYMERIZATION?
• Polymerization is a chemical process in which small molecules,
called monomers, join together to form a long-chain molecule,
or polymer.
• IMPORTANCE OF POLYMERIZATION:
• Polymerization processes are fundamental in creating a wide
variety of synthetic materials such as plastics, fibers, and rubbers.
TYPES OF POLYMERIZATION
Types of Polymerization
• Definition:
• A process where monomers add to a growing polymer chain one by
one, without the loss of any atoms or molecules.
• Steps:
• Initiation: A free radical, cation, or anion is generated to start the
reaction.
• Propagation: The active center adds monomers to the growing
chain.
• Termination: The reaction stops when two radicals combine or a
terminating agent is added.
• Examples:
• Polyethylene (used in plastic bags)
• Polypropylene (used in automotive parts)
CONDENSATION (STEP-GROWTH)
POLYMERIZATION
• Definition:
• A process in which monomers with two or more functional groups
react to form a polymer, with the elimination of small molecules like
water or methanol.
• Steps:
• Step 1: The monomers with functional groups react to form dimers.
• Step 2: The dimers react to form longer chains.
• Step 3: As the polymer chain grows, small molecules are released.
• Examples:
• Nylon (used in textiles)
• Polyesters (used in bottles and clothing)
OTHER TYPES OF
POLYMERIZATION
1.Copolymerization:
1. A process where two or more different monomers are polymerized
together to form a copolymer.
2. Example: Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), commonly used in tires.
2.Ring-Opening Polymerization:
1. A type of addition polymerization where a cyclic monomer opens up
to form a polymer.
2. Example: Polylactic acid (PLA), used in biodegradable plastics.
3.Ionic Polymerization:
1. A type of chain-growth polymerization that uses an ion (cation or
anion) to initiate the polymerization.
2. Example: Polystyrene (PS).
APPLICATIONS
• Everyday Materials:
• Plastics (Polyethylene, Polypropylene)
• Rubber (Polybutadiene, SBR)
• Synthetic fibers (Nylon, Polyester)
• Industrial Applications:
• Medical devices (Polyvinyl chloride - PVC)
• Packaging materials (Polystyrene)
• Electronics (Polyimides)
CONCLUSION
• Summary:
• Polymerization is a crucial process for creating a wide variety of
materials.
• Addition and Condensation polymerizations are the two main
types, each with distinct characteristics.
• Understanding the types of polymerization helps in developing
new materials for numerous applications.
