CE 480 Tutorial Distillation

The document contains a tutorial on distillation processes, specifically focusing on the separation of benzene and toluene mixtures through a fractionating tower. It includes four questions that require calculations related to reflux ratios, product flows, number of trays, and boil-up ratios for different feed compositions and desired product specifications. Each question is accompanied by relevant equilibrium data and graphs for analysis.

DISTILLATION TUTORIAL

Question 1

A saturated liquid feed 100 kmol/hr containing an equimolar amount of benzene

and toluene enters a fractionating tower at 1 atm. The optimum reflux is found to
be 3.0. You desire a distillate containing 95 mol% benzene and a bottoms
containing no more than 5 mol% benzene. What is the slope of the stripping
operating line? Calculate the vapour and liquid flows in this section.
Question 2

The figure below shows the equilibrium data for a mixture of benzene and
toluene that is to be distilled in a fractionating tower at 1 atm. A saturated liquid
feed containing 45 mol% benzene flows at 1,000 kmol/hr. A distillate containing
95 mol% benzene and a bottoms containing 10 mol% benzene are to be obtained.
What is the minimum reflux? Calculate the product flows.
Question 3

A distillation column operating at 1atm is used to separate

a mixture of benzene and toluene. 40% of the feed is
vaporised upon entering the feed tray. The feed contains
55 mol% benzene and flows at 1,000 kmol/hr. You desire
a distillate containing 95 mol% benzene and a bottoms
containing no more than 5 mol% benzene. The optimum
reflux is found to be 3. Use the equilibrium data given in
graph below. Determine the number of trays needed
giving a tray efficiency of 35% . Identify the feed stage.
Calculate the boil up ratio.
Question 4

A continuous fractionating column operating at atmospheric

pressure is to be designed to separate a mixture containing 35 mole
% of cyclopentane and the rest benzene into an overhead product
containing 93 mole% of cyclopentane and a bottom product of 97.3
mole% benzene. The feed enters at its boiling point at rate of 100
kmol/hr.
a) If the reflux ratio is 3, how many number of stages are
required?
b) What will be the number of theoretical stages if q = 1.2?
c) Calculate the reboiler ratio.
d) Number of stages at total reflux.
