MEANING OF ARTICLES.

The word a, an ,and the are


called articles. We use them before
nouns to indicate whether they are
general or specific.
Ex: A ball, An apple, The sun.
Kinds of articles.

1. Indifinite articles.
2. Definite articles.

Indefinite articles.

Indefinite articles are used
before singular, plural , countable,
and uncountable nouns.
Examples:

Definite articles.

Definite articles are used before


singular, plural, countable and
uncountable nouns.
‘The’ is used before a particular or
known noun.
Examples :-

Usage of articles:

‘A’
 Used before a noun beginning with a
consonant letters.
Ex : he is a docter.
 Used before measurements, quantities.

Ex : I have a bicycle.
I have a lot of jewels.
Usage of ‘an’.

 Used before a noun beginning with a


vowel.
Ex : It is an owl.
 Used before a noun beginning with
mute ‘h’.
Ex : Ponniyan Selvan is an historian
novel.
Usage of ‘the’

 Used when we refer to a particular


person or thing.
Ex : You meet the man.
 Used before certain well known
books.
Ex: Do you know the Ramayana?
