Distance Time Graphs

The document teaches how to calculate speed using distance-time graphs by applying a triangle method where speed equals distance divided by time. It provides examples to illustrate finding speed from given distances and times, as well as interpreting graphs to determine speed at specific time intervals. Additionally, it includes a test section for understanding the concepts presented.

Calculating Speed from a distance/time graph

LESSON OBJECTIVES

We are learning to:

-Accurately read and find the average speed
from a distance-time graph.
To calculate speed we use this triangle

Distance

Speed Time
X

This means divide

How do we use the triangle to work out
speed?

I travelled 12 miles in 4 minutes,

what was my speed?

We want to work out speed so we

cover it on our triangle

So now we have Distance

Time

Our distance is 12
Remember this means divide
The time taken is 4

So our speed is 3 miles per minute

Use the triangle to help you

If I travel 20 meters in 5 minutes, what is my speed?

What do I do first? Use the triangle to find out which

sum I need to do
Speed = distance
Time

Speed = 20
5

My speed is = 4 meters per mintute

Distance-time graphs

• Drawing a graph of distance against time

shows how the distance moved by an
object from its starting point changes over
time
Staying in one place
Moving away
Moving away faster
Coming home
Speeding up
Slowing down
So how do I work out my speed from looking at a distance/time
graph?

How fast was I moving at 4 minutes?

The first thing we do is find 4

minutes on our graph

Then we draw a line up to meet

the graph line

And then along to find out the

distance

So at 4 minutes I had travelled 40m

Now we can use our triangle to work out my speed

Speed = 40 Speed = 10 meters per minute

4
Let’s try another one – What is the speed at 20 seconds?
What do we do first?
Find 20 seconds on the graph
Next?
Distance (m)

Draw a line up from 20

seconds and then along to
find the distance

How far had I travelled at 20

seconds?
40m

What do I do now? Speed = 40

Use the triangle to work out the speed 20
Speed = 2 meters per second
