MME capstone project

The document presents a study on the forging behavior of metallic materials, specifically comparing hot and cold forging processes. It includes details on sample dimensions, recrystallization temperatures, microstructures, and hardness profiles before and after forging. The findings indicate differences in grain growth, hardness distribution, and the effects of temperature on the forging process.

Recrystallization
Temperature

•Melting Temperature = 1537 − (88 * C + 8 * Si + 5 * Mn + 5 * Cu +

1.5 * Cr + 4 * Ni + 2 * Mo + 2 * V + 30 * P + 25 * S) °C = 1505.91 °C
•Recrystallization temperature =
0.4 * Melting Temperature = 0.4 * 1505.91 °C = 602.36 °C

•Both the equations are empirical formula

•Target Temperature =750 °C
•Temperature achieved = 264 °C
•The actual temperature during hot forging is even lower as the sample
cooled down due to conduction, convection and radiation heat loss

is minimum at center
and maximum at both

• Hot Forging shows

almost similar results
with slight deviation due
to grain growth and
distribution of pearlite

• Cold forging shows a

random hardness profile
due the dynamic
recovery and
deformation of harder
pearlite
HARDNESS PROFILE
IN LONGITUDINAL
DIRECTION • Before Forging: Uniform
hardness across the
material.

After Forging:
• Hardness increased
gradually towards the
center.
• Edges exhibited lower
hardness due to the
spring-back effect.
• Hardness decreased after
the center due to
different fiber flow.
