Regression Ppt 1

The document outlines the objectives for students to identify and calculate the slope and y-intercept of regression lines, as well as formulate the regression equation. It explains key concepts such as dependent and independent variables, linear regression, and the best-fit line. Additionally, it provides examples and formulas for calculating the slope and y-intercept, along with practical applications related to student performance and attendance.

Objectives:

At the end of the period, the students will be able to:

a. Identify the slope and y- intercept from the
equation of the regression line
b. calculate the slope and y- intercept of the
regression line; and
c. formulate the equation of the regression line
Regression
Analysis
Dependent Variable- depends on other
variables or factors. It is something that is
influenced and affected. It is also associated
with the word effect or outcome.
Independent Variable- affects the dependent
variable. It is something you have control over,
one which you can choose and manipulate.
However, in some cases, you may not be able to
manipulate the independent variable. It is
commonly known as the cause or the reason
behind changes.
Linear Regression
- is a type of regression that consists of finding
the best fitting straight line on a scatter plot of
sample data.
Best- fit line
- also known as a trend line or line of regression
- it is a straight line that best represents the general trend of a
set of data points on a scatter plot, aiming to minimize the
overall distance between the line and data points.
- it is used to predict the value of y for a given value of x.

The slope and y- intercept of the regression line play an

important role in analyzing a set of data. The slope indicates the
steepness of a regression line and the y- intercept indicates the
location where it intersects the y- axis.
Equation of the regression line
ŷ= bx+a or ŷ= a +bx
Where;
b= slope of the regression line
- the coefficient of x
a= y- intercept of the regression line
Example: Identify the slope and
y- intercept
Regression Slope (b) Y- intercept
Line Equation (a)

ŷ= 3x-15 3 -15
2. ŷ= 20.5- 12x -12 20.5
How to calculate the slope and y-
intercept of a regression line?
Formulas:
Slope (b)
b=

y- intercept (a)

Example: Consider the following
data:
a. Find the equation of the regression line.
b. Draw the graph of the regression equation on a scatter plot.

x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
y 4 3 8 6 12 10 8
Example: Find the regression
equation using the following data.
x 5 10 20 8 15 25

y 40 26 18 30 20 15
A teacher believes that excellence is a fruit of hard work and
persistence. That’s why she wants to prove if the number of
students’ absences is related to their general average. On
her gathered data, the recorded number of absences and
general average in the recent semester are shown on the
table.
Number 1 2 3 5 7 9 10
of
absences
(x)

General 98 90 86 87 85 85 78
Average
