HOW?

13
The IMO 2020 regulation, is a global
rule that limits the amount of sulfur
in ships' fuel oil:
Limit
•The new limit is 0.50% sulfur
content by mass, down from the
previous limit of 3.50%.
When it went into effect
•The new limit went into effect on
January 1, 2020

14 14
Where it applies
Also, the new limit applies to all
ships operating inside of designated
Emission Control Areas (ECAs),
where the limit is 0.10%.
Benefits
The new limit has reduced air
pollution from ships by 70%, which
has had benefits for the environment
and human health.

NOx?
IMO, MARPOL, Annex VI (Air Pollution from
Ships)
Regulation 13
1.1 NOx-emission from diesel engines and shall
apply to:
each diesel engine with a power output of more
than 130 kW which is installed on a ship and
undergoes a major conversion on or after 1
January 2000.
18
ME TYPE ENGINE
INTRODUCTION

2.1 The phrase “major conversion”, means a

modification of an engine where:
• the engine is replaced by a new engine built on
or after 1 January 2000, or
• any substantial modification is made to the
engine, as described in the NOx Technical
Code 1.3.2.2 (e.g. changing camshaft, fuel
injection system, or any other NOx-related
settings or components)

INTRODUCTION
Market Demand?

• Increased Engine Power

• Lower Specific Fuel Oil Consumption
• Lower Cylinder Lube Oil Consumption
• Easy Adjustment of Parameters
• Low-load Minimum Running Speed
• Lower SFOC at Part Loads
• Flexibility Regarding Emission, reduce (Co2,
Nox, Sox, PM)
• Low Production Cost

Requires: Electronic Fuel Injection Control

32
ME TYPE ENGINE
INTRODUCTION

ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED ENGINES

Why?
To ensure:
• Fuel Injection Timing and Rate
• Exhaust Valve Operation
