What was the Great Depression ?
1930s
• The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression in during the
decade before World War II.
• In most countries, including the U.S. it started in about 1929 and lasted until the late
1930s or early 1940s.
• It was the longest, most widespread, and deepest depression of the 20th century.

Hoover Takes Action • At first,
President
Hoover was
against
offering
direct
government
relief.
• Instead, he
asked private
charities,
such as the
YMCA, to
help.
Many waited in unemployment
lines hoping for a job.
People in cities would wait in line for
bread to bring to their family.
Some families were forced to relocate
because they had no money.

• Some families were
forced to live in
shanty towns
– A grouping of shacks
and tents in vacant
lots
• They were referred to
as “Hooverville”
because of President
Hoover’s lack of help
during the depression.
Some families tried to make money by
selling useful crafts like baskets.

• It wasn’t till
President Roosevelt
took over and tried
to put the economy
back together that
people even saw a
glimmer of hope

IMPACT
United States - the Republican Party was
the dominant force from the Civil War to the
Great Depression. In 1932, Americans
elected Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt
• The great Depression affected not only
America but most of Europe as well. This
was because the other countries had taken
loans form USA during the time of the war,
and since the Wall Street Crash happened,
all of the money was asked to be paid at
once. Due to this some countries became
communists or dictatorships. These
countries only had one party for the voting

DICTATORS
Germany – Adolf Hitler or the Der Fuhrer was
the leader of the Nazi party. His main aims was
to unite all Germans, make Germany bigger,
destroy communism and get rid of racial
minorities
• China – Chiang Kaishek or Generalissimo was
part of the Guomindang party. He wanted to
unite all the Chinese, make China bigger,
modernize China and destroy communism
• Italy – Benito Mussolini or II Duce was part of
the Fascist party. He wanted to untie all
Italians, make Italy bigger, destroy communism
and strengthen Italy’s economy
• Soviet Union – Joseph Stalin or the Man of Steel
was part of the Communist party in Soviet
Union. He wanted to strengthen Soviet Union’s
economy, strengthen communism is the USSR
and strengthen USSR’s forces
