Lesson 3.2 Finding the Mean and Variance of the Sampling Distribution

The document outlines a lesson plan focused on the sampling distribution of sample means, including preliminary activities like prayer and attendance checking. It covers key concepts such as the Central Limit Theorem, formulas for calculating sample mean, variance, and standard deviation, along with a practice problem. Additionally, it includes a collaborative activity designed to reinforce the lesson through group work and teamwork.

Distribution of
Means
Learning
Outcomes
Today, you'll be able to:

• discuss how to find the mean and variance of the

sampling distribution of the sample means;

• define the sampling distribution of the sample mean

using the Central Limit Theorem
TERMINOLOGIES
The formula used to find the sample mean
is the same as that of the population
mean given in the following equation
below.

Standard Deviation

Practice Problem
1
Find the sample mean, variance
and standard deviation of the
monthly electricity usage (in
kWh) for a household taken from
a random sample of 6 months:

214, 178, 199, 201, 221, 193

Central Limit
Theorem
states that the shape of the
sampling distribution of
sample means will take the
shape of a normal curve as
the sample size (n) increases
without limit regardless of
whether the original
population is normal or not.
The Central Limit Theorem assures that
even if the original population does not
take the shape of a normal curve, the
sampling distribution of the sample
means will be normally distributed if the
sample size is large enough.
Principles for Applying the
Central Limit Theorem
1

If the population is normally distributed,

the sample means will have a normal
distribution regardless of the size, even if
n<30.
Principles for Applying the
Central Limit Theorem
2

If the population is not normally

distributed, the sample size needs to be n
greater than or equal to 30 for the sample
means to take a normal distribution
Principles for Applying the
Central Limit Theorem
3

If the sample size used is small n<30

from a population that is not normally
distributed, then the applications of the
Central Limit Theorem cannot be used.
