SCHEME (ICDS)
•The ICDS scheme is one of the flagship
programme of GOI and represents one of
the world's largest and unique
programmes for early childhood care and
development. The beneficiaries under
the scheme are children in the age group
of 0-6 years, pregnant women and
lactating mothers.
•The women and social welfare ministry
started this scheme in 1975 under
National Children's policy.
Objectives
• 1. To improve the nutritional and health status of
children in the age group 0-6 years.
• 2. To lay the foundation for proper psychological,
physical and social development of the child.
• 3. To reduce the mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and
school drop-out rate of children.
• 4. To achieve effective coordination amongst the
various departments to promote child development.
• 5. To enhance the capability of mother to look after
the normal health and nutritional needs of the child
(through nutrition and health education).
• 6. To facilitate, educate and empower Adolescent Girls
(AGs) to enable them to become self reliant and
vigilant citizens.
PACKAGE OF SERVICES
UNDER ICDS
The ICDS Scheme offers a package of six services, viz.
• i. supplementary nutrition
• ii. pre-school non-formal education
• iii. nutrition & health education
• iv. Immunization
• v. health check-up and
• vi. referral services
The last three services are related to health and are
provided by Ministry / Department of Health and Family
Welfare.

•Instates, women and child development
ministries/departments conduct this scheme.
•ICDS is centered on anganwadi workers who are local
women. They are trained to provide services. There is
one supervisor for 20-25 anganwadi workers. They are
called "Mukhya Sevikas" or supervisors.
•Four Mukhya Sevikas and a hundred anganwadi
workers work under one Child Development Project
Officer (CDPO). Anganwadi workers play the role of
multipurpose workers while actively co-operating in
implementing this scheme.
