Ethics Case Study

Joseph Freberg is facing ethical dilemmas at his job as a sales manager for Alcon company. Some of his salespeople are giving kickbacks to buyers, which is against company policy. Reporting this could get the salespeople fired and hurt the company. However, not reporting it allows unethical practices. Joseph's wife has also just been hired by his boss, making the situation more complicated. He must decide the best way to address the issues while protecting his and his wife's interests.

1. Situation Analysis :

Joseph Frebergs ethical dilemmas regarding his job and personal life. Working with Alcon company from 18 months as a sales manager. Not very conscious about doing their expenditures. Joseph found some workings by his co-worker and which were against the rules of his company. Breaking the hierarchy chain of the company. Ellen is to start work with his boss.

Alcons industrial environmental descriptions are given below:


1.It is situated in Ohama. 2.It is joined with the cala industrial specialized in air compressors in the southeast. 3.It has a corporate culture of sixteen hour days and six days a week work schedule. 4.It has a policy one of the statement of the policy handbook is our company stands for doing the right things at all times and giving our customers the best product for the best prices. 5.The chain of command of the company is a little complicated and longer.

Problem-1 : What are Josephs ethical problems ?


Solution :
His sales people only try to tolerate him and some times

underestimate him because of his age.

Some of his sales personnel were giving kickbacks to some

of his buyers which were against the company policy.

Kickbacks ultimately reduce quality and increase prices

but he could not report to the vice president because she had a tendency to shoot the bearer of bad news. He was in fear of losing the job of the personnel and his own.

Joseph knew Carl was going to pay off some big medical

bills but he had nothing to do against him.

He wanted to bring the matter into open or talk about it

with his boss, vice president but he discovered that his wife was selected by Kathryn, his boss as her new broker. If he took any steps that might be harmful for his wifes work.

Solution :
Talking with the vice president clearly.
Try to talk or discuss with the top level management

without concerning the vice president. Discouraging his wife to take the new opportunity from his boss. Bringing the matter into open for stopping these types of unethical practices.
Resigning from the job.

you need before making your decision ? Solution :

How the top level management will behave with me if I


raise my voice against kickback. I have to find another job if I decide to resign. How much my salary I will get in another firm. What will happen with my wife and her job ? What will my financial condition now ?
