Modular OSPE revision - Copy

The document outlines the preparation for the OSPE exam in Pharmacology, detailing the marks distribution across short and long stations. It provides specific instructions on how to attempt long stations, including required headings and experimental procedures, as well as a syllabus for modular tests covering various topics in pharmacology. Common mistakes to avoid during the exam are also highlighted, emphasizing the importance of thorough preparation.

OSPE Preparation

Dr. Muhammad Zeeshan Alam Khan

Demonstrator
Department of Pharmacology, ANMC
Learning objectives
At the end of this session, the student shall be able to
• Prepare and pass the OSPE, In Sha Allah
Marks distribution (total 60)
• OSPE stations = 8
• 6 short stations of 5 marks each = 30 marks
• 2 long stations 15 marks each (10 written and 5 viva) = 30
• Total written OSPE 50 marks plus 10 viva = 60 marks
Long Station, Experimental
• (1 out of 4 will come in exam)
1. Effect of drugs on rabbit's eye
2. Effect of drugs on frog's heart
3. Dose Response curve of Ach on Rabbit's ileum
4. Antagonism of atropine and Ach on Rabbit’s ileum
How to attempt long station
• Please don’t miss any headings
Rabbit's eye
• Apparatus
• Chemicals
• Procedure
• Precautions
• Results table (pupil size, conjunctiva, corneal & light reflex)
Frog’s heart
• Apparatus
• Chemicals
• Procedure
• Precautions
• Graph (contractions of heart after additions of drug)
Rabbit ileum
• Apparatus
• Chemicals
• Procedure
• Precautions
• Results table (height of contraction vs dose)
• Graph (dose-response curve, contraction of ileum
Long station pharmacy
(1 of these 5 will come in exam)
• Dextrose saline (copy includes only normal saline. not
dextrose saline. In dextrose saline, you also have to add
dextrose)
• Carminative mixture
• KMnO4 solution
• APC powder
• Sulphur ointment
How to attempt this station
Complete all headings
• Apparatus & Chemicals
• Calculations (before procedure, plz)
• Procedure
• Precautions
• Directions for use
• Clinical Uses/ indications
• Label
Modular Test Syllabus…
• Pharmacognosy (define, identify, clinical uses)
• Dosage forms (definitions, differences)
• Dose calculations (formulae, calculations)
• Weights and measures (conversions, abbreviations)
• Biostatistics (mean median mode def + calculation, SD SEM t-test
formulae, normal distribution curve)
• Prescription (parts, gout, arthritis, migraine, thyroid, DKA)
• Experimental (parts of apparatus, Ach calculations, Tyrode’s)
Pharmacognosy…
• Define Pharmacognosy
• Define Active Principal
• Identify the specimen and write down its clinical uses
Dosage forms…
• Define the following
• Solution
• Mixture
• Tablet
• Differentiate between solution & mixture
• Tablet & capsule
• Inhaler & nebulizer
• Cream & ointment
Dose calculations…
• Adult dose is 400 mg, child age is 6 years, calculate the dose

• Common mistake
• Not bringing your own calculator
• Typing whole formula together on the calculator (11+11+11/3=26.33)
• Not solving the units together/ writing wrong unit/ missing unit
Short stations
• Weights and measures conversions
• Solution and mixtures definition or dosage forms or
abbreviations (stat, bid, tds)
• Apparatus parts identification (tissue organ bath,
kymograph, etc. parts will be labelled A and B, you will have
to identify and tell uses)
• Pharmacognosy (plz ask any female about that, and see
clinical uses from practical copy)
Short stations
• Biostats (definition, or formula of Standard Deviation etc,
and calculation of given data)
• Prescription writing (10-12 diseases, plsz write in complete
pattern)
• Pharmacological calculations (dose calculations, drop per
min calculation in drip set, etc)
• Pharmacokinetics chapter formula, definition or calculation
Common mistakes
• Putting full formula on calculator will give wrong answer, do
step by step (if you write 11+11+11/3 on calculator, answer
will be 25.66, not 11)
• In prescription writing, don’t miss identity of prescriber or
superscription (write complete pattern)
• Don’t miss degree of Dr., phone # of Dr., weight of patient,
age of patient or address of patient
• Missing sign at the end
• Not giving proper time to study (biggest mistake)
Thank you…

Best of luck…
